The US public education needs work. I don't know if more is the answer.

If nothing else I would consider a school year with more frequent but shorter vacations. More vacations would give kids more time for projects etc and time to catch up.

When a student is having problems the public school system tends to throw more at them already which does not identify and/or correct the problem. Perfect example is math. A student has trouble they drop them back a few chapters and give them lots of practice problems(review is good but if you didn't understand it 3 months why would more problems from the same teacher make a go through the motions school kid learn it now). Side note, I had a college professor tell the class practice basic fraction problem because poor knowledge of fractions is a big cause of algerbra, trigonometry and calculus difficulties. He was right. Not one high school math teacher never did anything like that. They would just put problems up on the board. I digress. I think trouble shooting a students weak areas is a public school teacher competency problem since half them of them are clock punchers to begin with.

As a tax payer I don't want a longer day or year either. Heck they can't even fund physical education or the arts. Some schools don't even have enough books for the students. More money will be needed for salaries and expenses like heated or air conditioned buildings. Also again with doing more if a student hates, loathes or can't stand a subject or teacher a longer year will nothing to motivate a student and might even dissuade many from continuing education. I'm also not a fan of a highly structured life. Students need varying experiences, time management skills and learn how to work or learn how to learn in a setting other than the classroom.

Public education needs work in America and not just NJ. But there are too many issue for a longer day to be the answer.
