Carl Dennis Scales Jr. said he started March 1, 2004, talking with some friends about how "everyone was broke."

By the end of the day, Scales testified, he, Robert Austin Hall, Markie Jowan Riddick, Tornando Laron Simpson and Kyle Jaron Bunch had a plan to invade a home on South Williams Circle and rob its residents.

In a statement to police, Scales said, "All I had to do was drive, and by the end of the night I'd have some money in my pocket."

As it turned out, the take consisted of three cell phones and $65. And Brian Jarrod Pender, an Elizabeth City State University senior, was shot to death.

lets not plan our lives around getting a job when all ya gotta do is rob someone.

now all five of you can plan your lives around what the warden wants you to do.

I ACTUALLY NO THREE OF THESE MEN AND I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THEY WOULD DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS. IT IS JUST AMAZING THAT YOU CAN KNOW SOMEBODY FOR MANY MANY YEARS AND NOT EVER THINK THEY WOULD BE CAPABLE TO COMMIT SUCH A CRIME. IT IS REALLY SAD.

I think that all of these men were EQUALLY responsible for the death of this young man. I believe that when we as a society allow criminals (and this is what they are) to not serve an equal sentence (meaning; one of the men received LIFE and the others received no where near this) you will continue to have them do or go along with horrible things and say "it wasn't me" and get off with a slap on the wrist; This is not right. They ALL should be in prison for LIFE!!!!

I know all these guys 2 were ex boyfriends. This is not who they were and no nothing will justify what they did. But drugs can also make you do terrible things that someone in their right mind would never even think of. Yes they were going to rob them. But probably wouldn't of killed anyone. And i have known Carl scales since i was 10 years old he is a kind and loving person. Yes made stupid young decisions but he himself would never be apart of taking someone's life if he knew that is what was gonna happen.
