Also, for those in town, you may want to check back with Qwest. They've expanded DSL in Deming over the past year. But not to us small band of schmucks 400ft south of town :-(

We've been waiting for about 3 yrs. for Quest to get Internet and a few other package deals. They keep putting pamphlets in our bill, but so far nothing, now someone else is moving in and may have to check on that because we're tired of waiting for Quest. These deals get to the bigger cities first, a little draw back of living in a smallish place..........but hey, we don't have to put up with a lot of traffic, a lot of people either so guess we'll stick around here and continue to wait.

When I lived in the Deming area, the choice was dialup (hideous, averaging 1.5 kbps), DSL if I lived near the center of town (which I didn't), cable (ditto DSL), and wireless (overpriced at $80/month).

It'll be interesting to see if Wi-Power will be any better in terms of speed, price, and coverage. But I'm betting against it. The pi$$ poor services in Deming, like Web access among others, and lack of anything other than McJobs in the area is why I left for better pickings in Las Cruces.

I feel ya. I've been waiting almost 5 years. I order DSL from Qwest before I moved here. Knowing this is remote area, I called once a week to re-confirm the install. 4 days before the move, Uhaul packed up, they emailed to me saying the local architect canceled it. Last year, I got it escalated to the corporate headquarters. I ended up with 2 guys telling me to either find someone who has access and put a wireless router on their roof or move.

DSL has a 3 mile limit; but that's not as the crow flies. Like most cities, the telephone lines run up and down street. I've got DSL endpoints north, east and southwest of me. Wanna hear real pain? I've got an easement on the northern border of my property. It's for Qwest fiberoptic. 20 mbps. They won't install that, either.

So you were one of the people down yesterday? Mine dropped twice just after 5pm. They are up on the mountain again today.

I didn't use it yesterday evening, it's running at a snail's pace this morning. It's nice when it works, and I like the idea of using a locally owned company. When I first signed up, they advertised "wind, dust, rain... bring em on." I just noticed they changed the ad, took out the wind part.

Snail's pace here too. And I'm with you: I like working with a local company and it's nice for the average user, but they are only 2 people.

Got a response today:

I'm going to be doing some testing on my connection today. Also going to call them to see if they have a location I can test from and what their support looks like.

At least with a phone company providing all these services, they're around 24/7 and 365, unlike private companies that can go out of business, fold up and move out. Too bad our local phone company isn't being quicker about providing for people further out in the county, if people go to this company mentioned in our paper, I'd say our phone company missed out, missed the boat, and missed getting a handle on the situation because had they been faster on the drawer, we would have signed up with them.

I called in and this is NOT a "wireless" service. It's a microwave point to point service. The connection is provided by TransWorld Network, which I believe is the company that supplies Internet connectivity to the utility companies. Microwave signals are good for 30 miles. The closet tower is NE of Deming. 9 miles from my home, which is near the Red Roof Rock Shop. 24 x 7 support, free test for connectivity and for $2 more than I pay SWNM, the connection is a guaranteed 5 times faster.

You can test it at Radio Shack on Gold Ave.

Sounds very interesting, my home is not far from yours, SE of Deming. I'm curious exactly where the microwave access point is. I'll have to stop by Radio Shack for more info.

Just got a response from them, they said you must be 10 miles or less from their access point. He couldn't tell me where the Deming tower was, asked for my address to see if I was in their coverage area.

I'm getting odd responses from them as well. They said we could test at Radio Shack. But the install order wasn't processed until Friday afternoon. They got some weird tech support issues going on right now.

there's a microwave tower just north of town on the other side of Interstate 10, on the frontage road where the exit ramp is. Between Gold Street and where the Texaco gas station (I believe it's Chevron now) is. I wonder if that's where their access point is.

I believe you are correct. I just spoke with the technical sales guy. There are multiple access points on that tower. The difference is, each access point runs on a different frequency. When they test at your location, the pick the best frequency. One of those access points is also microwave. Very interesting setup. Gotta be better than the 2.4 ghz that SWNM broadcasts on. lol
