"In his attempt to explain, Rep. Marcus Oshiro said, "For every dollar in bonds you spent on fixing up a park, that same amount of money would be taken from a classroom or a school."
Let me see, toss more money at a system ranked about 45th of 50 states or spend some on fixing the parks that visitors use attracting MORE visitors who actually pay a huge percentage of the tax collected.......
I know, raise taxes, spend even MORE on the failed school system AND give the legislators another 36% raise...let the squatters have the parks and tell tourists to stay home, you are not welcome or wanted anymore.

you tell us so eloquently that you are running out of patience with lawmakers who refuse to take sure and dramatic action to end our state's oil addiction.
under your scenario no airplanes would be allowed to land as they could not be refueled. no matson cargo ships would be able to dock here as they cannot be refueled. no military presence would remain as the styrykers require fuel.
just who do you think you are anyway?
please take your elitist attitude in putting hawaii back in the cave from whence you came.

Got to wonder which extremist animal group Barbara Jessee belongs to. Lots of these 'canned' letters being sent to papers across the country without the identification of the group who is actually responsible for them. Doesn't say much about their credibility.

No, we are not running out of oil and gas. The US has plenty...it is political correctness that forbids its exploration and use.
Technologies exist today to get it out of the ground with little effect on the environment.
It would be instructive to investigate the big donors to our Congress. After all, Alaska was locked up by Clinton - and he got huge donations from the Saudis and other Middle East oil oligarchies.
Europe and Japan have nuclear energy but the US is still way behind.

Wouldn't it be cheeper and easier to kill the pigs on the mainland and then ship the meat over here?
I'm surprised the legislature isn't involved in this one.... they know enough about "pork".
LOL LOL LOL

Thhis statement isn't about oil or pigs or parks or schools, it's about the inept government that runs this state. I just can't seem to understand why their is a budget deficit. It's obvious the government isn't spending money on education (one of the lowest ranked systems in the nation), it isn't spending very much on roads and highways (don't believe me, drive down Ward Avenue, Kamehameha Hwy from Aiea to Pearl City, Beretania, Kalakaua, King St. take any on/off ramp to H1, etc., etc.. That list could go on and on and on. I think I have to agree that the system is bloated with too many high paid employees. That is proven by traffic on a state holiday. The H1 is like a ghost town then. Graduate from UH and you have a guaranteed 6-figure job somewhere in the system. Nothing like 21 year olds living in a $600,000 home with two Beemers or Mercedes. What's with working your way up these days. Any way, I don't want to get too far off track, but I think the government seriously needs to look at staffing and payroll. The state may want to do desk audits on every position (done by independent auditors from anywhere but Hawaii, and members not related to anyone in this state) and see what they say.
