My husband and I were in a serious head on collision on highway 98 (heading east) close to the "Laid Back Living" park model trailer business. It happened April 5 (a thursday) around 4 to 4:30 PM.
A dark green midsize sedan left the west bound lane and headed straight for us doing at least 60mph. My husband laid on the horn and started to say "you stupid ---"and they hit us head on. It all happened in a matter of seconds.
My husband and I blacked out for a minute and then felt the horrible pain and could'nt get our breaths for awhile.
We actually thought we were going to die.
A woman who was behind us got out of her car and came right to us and talked to us to keep us calm and encouraged. She said she saw the whole thing. She stayed with us until the rescue vehicles came. We got her name; it is Patty Marshall from Lillian, a true angel to us. We hope to see her again and thank her again.
We were told by the EMT that they had to wait to get us out, because the other car's occupants were in much worse shape and had to be life flighted out.
A few days later when my son's went to our van at a wrecker/tow yard in foley to get our personal belongings out of our van, the worker there told my son's the other car was driven by mexicans that had no license or insurance.
It is now April 18, almost three weeks now, and I have not read or seen anything on a news station about the wreck. I'm assuming that with all the publicity about illegal immigrants (the one in VA Beach that killed two young girls, and the other in California that killed a movie producer and his son, both cases they were hispanic) driving DUI with no licenses/no insurance, the news media does not want to print or report all these same incidents. I think they are afraid it will cause bad feelings toward the many immigrants working here. My husband and I have no bad feelings toward any immigrant or migrant workers that are hard working and obey our laws. We were actually on our way to our favorite Mexican restautant just over the Perdido Bay bridge (Vallarta's) to celebrate just buying the van on Wednesday, and we registered it that Thursday!!! We are friends with many of the Mexican waiters at the restaurant; they are hard working great guys. We were just 15 minutes away from there when it happened.
The wrecker yard worker also told my son's that they had so many cars there from wrecks caused the same way, and the city makes him keep them stored until they get them out, and they don't pay much at all for his service.
I just want all people living in the beautiful area of Foley, Elberta and Lillian that have to use 98, to please be aware of the danger of these people.
I have no problem with migrant workers who obey our laws, and drive carefully. And it is NOT just the migrants/immigrants that are a problem. It is also the rude agessive drivers that seem to be in such a hurry and have to do OVER the speed limit just to pass those of us who are driving the limit or a little under. And it is not just rednecks in trucks, it is women with kids in cars, and all ages.
Please, be more considerate of other drivers, and obey the rules of the road. If you have to pass, do it correctly, not on double yellow lined areas or near hills.
It seems that Americans have gotten into a fast living, more aggressive way of living. And when you honk your horn to let them know you don't appreciate their rudeness, they give YOU the "finger"!!!!!!!
Let's TRY to think more about getting back to road courtesy and safer driving, PLEASE??!!!!!!!!
