Where I'm moving has a better, although larger, school system. The property taxes fund a lot of it, and they are twice what they are here. We had the option of having a fundraiser or each set of parents just contribute $100 per year. I must say it was much better than having so, so many fund raisers like here. Their core classes are more advanced and there is more of them. The State places a higher priority on secondary schools than this one. Moreover, there are many people in the workforce, of course it's a city of 100,000, but these people place more of a value on the schools, and are much, much more active in PTA, PTO, school board meetings, and other school events besides the usual football like around here. If no more people had voted YES than come to PTA meetings, it would have never passed. They must have been afraid of losing football, because that is the best attended, most talked about, community supported(with taxpayer $$, I might add - City of Foley - $30K per year to Watson - City of Foley funding indoor practice center too)school event hands down. Not to say football is not large in other places, but there seems to be less of an emphasis on that and more on the overall aspects of education and funding of it. That's why I'm leaving - it's for my kids - and I mean it.

WDG... as a retired school teacher you should know that the schools could not predict the increase number of illegal aliens, the ESL teachers that would have to be hired, free meals all of which the federal government requires, for which same federal government provide little to nothing to the county. Also the great social activist Obama did provide stimulus for education to school districts classified in poverty status and money for technology, not educators. What good is technology such as smart boards, computers and so forth if there are no teachers to use it to educate children. I know, let's take retirement from educators like you who do not give a crap about the children and use it to pay for teachers who do care about the kids they are driven to help. I can promise you that the day you retired the children were probably better off.
And Give me a break, that was only in Foley. Similar rallies have and are scheduled for other cities in Baldwin County so do not think you speak for the other 169000 Baldwin County residence who did not show up for the rally. By the way, if I did not have to work sunday it would have been 3001 since you are counting.
As another retired school teacher I have expressed my recommendation of Voting NO. Eliminate Supervisors, Excessive Administration within each school, and many of the positions assigned because of busing and increased crime related to the schools. It is NOT the place of the school to hire additional instructors nor to take ILLEGAL ALIENS into the school system. In fact why not have the IRS send agents into the school, remove the students and family, sendingthe Illegals back home. Remove the COST of Busing from the Academic Budget (has nothing to do with academic attainment which is the purpose of education) and move it into Transportation. Leave the current budget for education and we have NO problem. Of course who gives a dam- about Transportation. Additionally the council should STOP playing "sympathy games" to gain the women's vote for higher taxes. Would not be a bad idea to remove all the current County Commissioniers and replace them with more fiscially responsible representitives. Could Drop Football!!!
