Novato backs relief for Hamilton truck nuisance

Brent Ludvigson and his dog Bella pass through the entry gate on Todd Roadbehind residences at Hamilton in Novato, where some residents are upset about the use of the road for trucks and the transport of heavy equipment being used for the Hamilton Restoration Project and the proposed Bay Trail construction.

How about the four leeks in the leeve. Stop this project now until the find and fix these leaks. This city is hiding this and it is going to cost them in the end. No leaks were reported until the wetlands project started. My neighbor is trying to sell their house on Emerson ave and water and mud in their yard. Who will buy this house?

Please reread the article. City money is not involved in funding - the funding is from the wetlands restoration project which is federal tax money. The tax money comes from all taxpayers not city funds.

The article is wrong, the move of the road is entirely at the cities will. The cost that comes form the Feds is minimal compared to the surveys, site studies and engineering, that must, by law, be done by the municipality. The road is being moved for no engineering or geographical reason other than the proximity to homes that were built next to it.

Speaking of trucks hauling dirt. I was at the AAA on Smith Ranch Rd. today and during a short period of time I saw a half dozen trucks traveling up the road from 101 to the private airstrip area. Are they taking dirt in to the airport or are they taking it out?

Is it along the current road? I see there are test wells along the current roadway??

Answer: From the Port of Oakland. They are dredging the toxic waste out of the shipping channel and dumping it in Hamilton.

The article is correct. The funding is to come from the federal tax dollars for the wetlands restoration. It is a request in the bill. While the request is from the city, all of the Todd Road Working groups have agreed that it should be moved away from the homes. They are a good example of how angencies should work together to solve problems, not just point fingers.

I was having lunch yesterday on Smith Ranch Rd. and saw a big sign about the federal recovery stimulus bailout money doing a project on Smith Ranch Rd.
I was driving so I didn't have time to read it, but it must have something to do with the trucks that you saw.

The problem was created by the City of Novato by building houses so close to the road in the first place. So now they get all the taxpayers in the country to repair their own planning blunders.

The road is being moved because all the parties agreed that it is misplaced and causes undue harm and a hazard to the residents. I've talked with people on the committee and the money is in the bill and does not come from Novato. Please site your source that confirms that the city will foot the bill.

According to the article:

"City officials were not prepared Tuesday to estimate the cost of the alternative road. The Todd Road Working Group and the city hope construction funds will be absorbed into the budget of the wetlands restoration project, which calls for 10.6 million cubic yards of dredged mud from Oakland to create 2,500 acres of wildlife habitat at Hamilton and nearby Bel Marin Keys."

Your source of info seems to be more optimistic than the author of the article who notes that they "hope" the money is in the bill. Based on what usually happens in this case, either the city will pay for the road and spend years suing the feds for the costs, or the road will simply not be built. Maybe this time will be different but probably not.
