Fog Horn in Marina Del Rey

Fog Horn in Marina Del Rey

I have lived in the Marina now one year very close to Washington Blvd and I hear a horn almost every night off in the distance that sometimes drives me crazy. My friend that vists here can even sleep once they start hearing it.

It is a G# tone and blasts for 2 seconds and does this over and over with hardly a gap of silence between sometimes. I know that harbors have fog horn beacons that sound out when there is low visibility but isn't there supposed to be standards for sound level and sound duration and gaps of silence.

I read somewhere where Harbors usually let out 2 fog horn blasts that are 2 seconds long and then 20 seconds of silence. This beacon in Marina Del Rey never seems to have the 20 seconds of silence. It's like some's car alarm is going off in the distance - all night long. I live as far as you can get from the channel mouth and still hear this as if it were my neighbors phone - every night. Can someone enlighten me on why this is? Do we have fog every night?

Two years late but still helpful I hope. I'm currently hearing the foghorn at 12:45am and its driving me crazy too. I'm over on Washington near Abbot Kinney. I heard it last weekend in the middle of the day when I was in Playa del Rey. I just now realized it is a foghorn thanks to your post.

The Marina del Rey fog horn is on 2 sec, off 2 sec, on 2 sec, off 12 sec for a total cycle of 18 sec (0.3 minutes). I have always presumed that it was located on the breakwater but I do not know.

Welp, the tone was back this morning at 5 am! Washington Blvd and Palawan. Just barely loud and repetitive enough to wake and keep me up, like princess and the pea

I live at Culver and Centinela with new double glazing and I have to put me headphone on to watch a movie and 32 db ear plugs to sleep.

Please someone walk down to the end of the walkway on the north jetty and clip the wires to stop this damn foghorn. Local residents pay alot of money to rent and own here and we need to sleep. As a boater, I understand we don't need the foghorn anymore. we all have gps, radar, depth instruments on our vessels.
The lights on the seawall/jetties are all we need. Residents need to complain to get something done, or a site like change dot org or similar.

Residents ban together please !!!!
