An interesting point that wasn't made.
The El Segundo city council is looking over the deal that was JUST approved by the County that day, YET the El Segundo Firefighters UNION AND the UNION supporting fire chief IS ALL IN FAVOR of the move to the county.
JUST who with county is making WHAT KIND DEALS to the city firefighters union that THEY want to dissolve the El Segundo Fire department go to the county so badly?
There is something going on behind "closed doors" that the people of El Segundo (and the council?) are being kept in the dark about.
Typical UNION, Screw your employer,screw the city, AND screw the people of the community.
But from what I've been told, that 90% of these El Segundo firefighter DON'T EVEN LIVE IN THE CITY and there are reports that 60% live over 50 miles away,some almost 100 miles away, That would explain the lack of loyalty these "heroes" have for their city and in wanting to go COUNTY.
I think El Segundo should KEEP their Fire Department Just THROW OUT THE DISLOYAL UNION SCUM.

The few years that i lived in El Segundo, I really enjoyed the city. That was 20 years ago. Things seem to have changed in this very tiny city.
For the life of me, I cannot see why the city council has such concern about losing a fire staff that never really has to fight fires. If they can save that much money, why are they hesitating? I agree with Richard Cory that the Union is probably hiding some deal and I am sure that the city council is not as clean as people may think. The city has the opportunity to rid itself of an extremely expensive fire department that has ten, yes I said ten fire captains. With one fire every three years, and with the schedules that these folks work, I wouldn't be surprised if the average captain sees a fire every 10 years ... and they all make a quarter of a million a piece ... let's be real here.
"I take my role very seriously.... My obligation is to this community," he said. "The last person who would ever want to turn this Fire Department over to the county is Kevin Smith."
I am sure ... ever see how much money this guy makes?
Besides outsourcing the fire department, the city should also start looking at ways to reduce the size of their city operations and outsource it as well to a private industry that is cheaper, more productive and more efficient for the citizens of the city.

Some years ago. our city fire department here in Hawthorne went to county fire. There was no change in the fire or paramedic coverage. The Hawthorne fire fighters went door to door with a petition to go county. When I asked one of our police officers what was going on, he replied 90 percent of the fire fighters lived outside the city and wanted to transfer to stations closer to home.

This is all about money, salaries, and convenience for firemen. It will change nothing for the taxpayers. It doesn't matter to Joe Citizen on a daily basis. The union greed is awful and is killing our cities, county, state, and country. It's time to cut back on the inflated salaries and benefits given to government workers. Cut the pay of firemen and you will still have more than enough applicants for these coveted jobs.
#5 Aug 18, 2010
Well if you've got firemen that live 50 or 100 miles away from El Segundo, then it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why they support switching over to LA County.
They'll be able to transfer to a County fire station that is much closer to their homes...

No bigger bunch of self entitled and self centered ogvernment workers than firemen. They really don't do shiite, especially in El Segundo where most of the large employers have their 'in house' fire deaprtments that do all the heavy lifting, such as Chevron, Northrup, etc etc.

What a bunch of morons on this blog! With LACoFD you get the best FD in the US more man power more experienced firefighters. The only reason El Segundo doent want to go county is it wants it say on what firefighters do or maybe raid the cookie jar what a joke of a city.

Dude the last time I saw county fire trying to put down a blkaze it was obvious that they were all affirmative action hires. Not just by appearance. Their performace sucked. it looked like a bunch of rehtards dressed up like firemen for halloween.

You people in el segundo deserve a volunteer department,you guys are idiots. the reason no fireman lives in the city is because its too expensive. you sound like a bunch of tax cheating consevative wussies who are envious of the firemen and dont amount to a pimple on there ass.

This guy, "the el segundo blogger" doesn't know what he's talking about either. He thinks that just because he posts a bunch of stats, copies and pastes other articles that talk about the budget crisis going on, that he's a pro on the topic. Well...I know one thing for sure, the fire department has already taken a hefty salary cut (no overtime, reduced staffing, and agreeing to concessions). I support the move to LA County, just because it saves almost 100 jobs in the city, saves the city money, and doesn't have the "City of El Segundo" contributing to the already large un-employment numbers in the country.

Hey Steve, take another look at the blog again, we both support each other. Nothing was cut and pasted in my blog. But I want you to know I support the rest of your comment 100%!

This article does not properly reflect the comments I made nor the eye-opening fire and police union pay data that I presented at the City Council meeting. However, I understand the meeting ran late, and the reporter was probably under a deadline and overloaded with information.
Here is a summary of what I said when I spoke at the meeting. The data that I referenced, and much more city employee salary data and information, is available on the Public Safety Project web site, PublicSafetyProject.org , at the following web address:
I have great respect for the work done by our sworn firefighters and police officers. But this does not excuse them and their unions from looting the public treasury of the city they are sworn to protect. With the assistance of mayors and city councilmembers who received thousands of dollars of their campaign support, they obtained greatly excessive and unsustainable union contracts that are almost entirely one-sided.
Substantial pay cuts of 20% to 25%, and reform of special pay, overtime, pensions, and vacation and sick leave are all necessary to solve our city’s budget problems which they have caused.
The firefighters may give up 5%, which is a reduction from their 11.25% raise (three consecutive 3.75% raises) in their current contract, which was obtained well after the recession began.
Out of 57 full-time sworn firefighters in 2009 for whom data was released ( PublicSafetyProject.org ):
The maximum, average, and median pay were:$270,052; $161,704; and $157,682.
6 (11%) earned more than $250,000;
13 (23%) earned more than $200,000;
32 (56%) earned more than $150,000;
53 (93%) earned more than $100,000.
Out of 64 full-time sworn police officers in 2009 for whom data was released:
The maximum, average, and median pay were:$425,775; $139,121; and $131,868.
1 (2%) earned more than $400,000 ($425,775);
2 (3%) earned more than $300,000 ($327,076 and the above);
8 (13%) earned more than $200,000;
21 (33%) earned more than $150,000;
51 (80%) earned more than $100,000;
53 (83%) earned more than $90,000;
57 (89%) earned more than $80,000.
The City Council should ask the firefighters union to give up at least 20% to 25% of their pay, and ask the police union to give up at least 15% to 20%.
Do not go to the county for fire and paramedic services.

One thing dave b is a fatty who when tried to make it into the fire department didn't make it so he went to ucla for money. So there is one reason why he is bitching. He keeps saying he isn't bitching but if he wasn't then he wouldn't make his blog in the first place think about that? Also in his last blog he accuses the esfd of making a blog resembling "the gundo blogger" theirs is completely different and also don't they have as much as a " freedom of speech" as you as you had stated in another post Dave. And also why don't you tell everyone who really called who first with turnbull dave you lying wuss. If you aren't so afraid why'd you post salaries in a website? I honestly hope some one throws a brickin your window and when you call the police to come save your fat a$$ no one comes. I vote burns to be captian and police chief as he keeps saying about all these pay cuts hell if u can do it for free Dave and think you can do better I say go go it Dave. Keep the the citizens of el segundo in their security bubble and keep their lives soooo perfect where there is no harm in their life would u really put your face in front of a gun to save a complete stranger? Please you don't have the guts. Half of the citizens here feel so safe because the espd ha kept their lives safe. Let's see what happens in a matter of an hour if espd took a furlough day all of them off let's see what happens to your safe life won't be safe for very long would it? And just to let everyone know el segundo is the ONLY city in socal who doesn't pay for trash pick up. We want everything handed to us we are a bunch of materialistic premadonnas I know people in other cities they pay 5000 annually we pay HALF that. So dave how about some real facts from now on. Coming from a gundo resident who knows the facts

Wow. Such hate & rambling from a so-called ES resident posting from Rancho Santa Margarita. It's got to be a vindictive ES safety official. I know Dave B.(known him for many years), and he developed 30 pound weight gain from Type II diabetes when his infant son was being treated at UCLA hospital over 1.5 years with a life threatening illness. Losing a son can be pretty traumatic, it can even cause some health problems. I also read the facts posted in the Gundo Blog and Mr. B made a pretty good case in outlining the facts about ESPD Captain Turnbull, and so did the South Bay Beach Reporter, and the LA Weekly in an independent review. The e-mails and other evidence show Turnbull called first, and on city time, made him look like a vindictive fool with a power trip.
What kind of public safety official would call on violence for someone posting some comments and facts? Dave B. must be really gaining traction on ESFD and ESPD officials to cause such a violent, rambling, and incoherent reaction by the public safety associations to turn on him so blindly with rage. Wow, his facts must be really getting to you folks! I am sitting here laughing my butt off. I also know from Dave B's posts that the Gundo Blog was created to stop the LA County fire merger, and to pull the curtain open on the outrageous salaries you cops and firefighters are making. And I would say he's done a great job in exposing you folks pretty accurately. All I see here (as a resident) is another fellow resident who is very good at articulating facts taken from city hall, posting it, and letting the residents form their own objective opinions. He seems to be way more credible than you. Unlike you, at least he can form complete sentences.
The Gundo Blogger posts it doesn't allow rambling, anonymous posts (like this anonymous one posted by you) from a bunch of prima donnas and whiney cops and firefighters who are desperately trying to get El Segundo to drink their Kool-Aid. Most of the town is backing the Gundo Blog's view, you folks are looking like a bunch of desperate fools.

There are 8 cities within a relatively small area: El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Hermosa, Manhattan, Palos Verdes, Redondo, Torrance, that could merge their City Services and save a fortune.
Every City has their own street sweepers, Sewer trucks, Fire trucks and ladders, Police cars, SWAT trucks..etc.
All support Records Bureaus, Jails, K9s, SWAT, Arson, CSI... the list goes on. Why do we need 8 of everything when most of the time they sit idle!
Isn't it about time we consolidate these services and save MONEY!!!

i guess im confused you read these articles and believe what they say? if you read an article your spouse is anorexic you'd believe them? and nope no fire fighter or police officer i dont have the guts to stand in front of a gun trying to kill slums like you. do you have the guts to stand in front of a gun? put your self in an officers shoes next time when you have a gun at the back of your head dont you want a police officer to come save you? thought so. and sorry for your confusion your mistake people travel :)

Ps. you do realize the PD and FD took pay cuts right? some of them over 12% so why are you guys still complaining they even have to take furlough days with out pay. again why are you still complaining you got what you wanted? maybe you and your buddy dave didnt know that, but yet dave is still posting and "rambling" on about taking action when action has already been taken. now im sitting here laughing my butt off because you have no idea whats already been done. El segundo is a very small town dont tell me you dont have a neighbor or know someone that is a firefighter or a cop and respect what they do for you EVERY SINGLE DAY. and if you do i really hope you respect them because one day your going to need them and they wont come to help. think about that.

i just keep coming up with things but now that you told the whole world about his disease and what happened to his son and told people about his personal personal life.yes i was aware he had been through those things thank you captain obvious. again if you live in el segundo it is a very small world there news gets around. that is very sad to hear but that is no excuse to take anger out on people just doing their job. just to me what i see is someone trying to get what they want because things havent been going his way for the past few years. dont blame anyone for what happened its a very sad topic but its something to grieve in privacy. god doesnt give anybody obsticles they cant handle. again sorry for the loss of his son and his disease
