As we approach the “financial cliff,” ostensibly debating which entitlements to cut, as a quid pro quo for increases in taxes, few of us expect the liberals to be swayed to give up a single entitlement or even reductions in their costs. Nobody thinks Obama is serious about allowing any entitlements to be cut; he is going to continue, in the words of the late, great Darrell Royal, to “dance with what brung him;” that is, continue to pander to the entitlement class that elected, and re-elected, him. Some conservatives believe that Obama is willing to “go over the cliff,” and that he will brazenly let the country fall into bankruptcy rather than concede any meaningful cuts in entitlements.

One of the biggest and most counterproductive Government wastes is OBEMLA, a Washington bureaucracy dedicated to promulgation of bilingual education. Bilingual education has been debated ad nauseam, and many Americans still do not even know what it is. Many, if not most, think it is the practice of teaching foreign languages in public schools. Almost everyone agrees that learning at least one foreign language is a good thing. However, bilingual education DOES NOT teach a foreign language to native English speakers. Not at all. What it does is teach core public school subjects in the language of a child’s ethnic origin. It is therefore an obstacle, not an aid, to learning English.

Many bilingual education teachers are themselves not native speakers of English and teach students “English” in a foreign language, inevitably with a foreign accent. English is simply one of the core courses, including social studies, math, etc., that bilingual educators teach the students in their foreign tongue.
Activists who advocate bilingualism could care less about handicapping students in public schools. Those of us who, over the years, have observed firsthand what they have wrought, have no doubt that bilingual education retards and impedes the learning of English, the tool they need most in securing meaningful employment (outside the bureaucracy of bilingual education). The advocates’ primary interest is their own job security, growing the bureaucracy, OBEMLA, and creating thousands of more teaching jobs, especially for minorities who cannot compete on an even keel with native English teachers in subjects other than foreign languages. Illegal immigration, therefore, is the “sine qua non” of the perpetuation of bilingual education. These activists are among the stronger forces behind demands for “immigration reform,” and essentially, open borders. They will pay lip service to immigration control, but they know that the borders will never be controlled without the magnets that bring illegal aliens here: no, not jobs, but mainly,“entitlements.” The bilingual education activists, and their corrupt allies in Congress, also know that immigration cannot be controlled without a national identity card and vigorous enforcement sanctions against employers and those who harbor illegal aliens for self-serving reasons. They include subversive pseudo religious and political organizations who want to increase their membership with groups beholden to them for their “assistance” in aiding and abetting them to evade immigration laws.

I think the government is doing a fine job. They're not perfect but they do the best they can with what they have. Let's pledge our support and try to work together and everyone will be satisfied.

As the budget debate continues in Washington, now would be the perfect time for Congress to lop off that giant lump of bureaucratic fat called "bilingual education." As Stirrup pointed out above, it has no sound, logical reason to exist. It is a lot like Head Start in that it was created just to give the less competent teachers job opportunities and to increase their demographic numbers for EEO employment quota purposes. Such irresponsible political creations by Congress is why we are $16.3 in debt, and the reason we have the sorriest, dumbed-down public education system in the world.

I have never seen a bilingual educator who was actually fluent in either English OR Spanish. They pass on their incompetence, dumbing down the English-challenged students who should be immersed in, and learning, English. Those misguided students should not be dallying in classes that pander to their inability to speak English by teaching them all subjects in their native tongues.

It was interesting, and predictable, to note that none of those answering this thread so far has offered a single argument to justify bilingual education. As their lower mental capacity dictates, they indulge in name-calling and attempts to change the subject, or to make it a race, or Obama, issue.

Congress: Get rid of the bilingual education Boondoggle! NOW IS THE TIME! Wake up and smell the coffee! Save our economy and our public schools, and stop the division and bifurcation of our society! Stop this short-cut to welfare! Above all, stop illegal immigration, the source of "English-challenged" students!

So you have seen every bilingual educator? Impressive.

You have no clue as to the purpose of bilingual education. No use trying to convince a person of the purpose of bilingual education if they have made a gross ASSumption based on their own experiences. Especially, one that has made judgement on bilingual education teachers based on their meeting with them. I suppose the person has knowledge of all languages to make such a gross ASSumption. It might come to a surprise to you but Spanish is not the only language taught in the United States. Geeeezzzz!

Here is another gross ASSumption. Bilingual educators must be native Speakers. What an ignorant comment. Many scholars are not native English speakers. The purpose of education is to TEACH. Surprised? On what data do you base your ASSumptions? Please don't tell me personal experience in Texas. People who support bilingual education are activist? That has to be the most gross ASSumption of all. Amazing how you never provide research to support any of your points. You never provide a viable solution. Shame on you!

Take a course in remedial reading, then come back and show me where I said I had seen every bilingual educator. Not everyone is a plebeian, uneducated oaf like you. Just because most of the people who post here are Internet trolls, like you, doesn't mean that we all are. You are making the false assumption that you can converse intelligently with an educated person. You know nothing about me, and since you are an authority and credible source on absolutely nothing, I would be wasting my time telling you who I am or what my credentials are.

You appear too dumb to recognize the issue. The issue is bilingual education. You have not, and obviously cannot, say anything positive about bilingual education. You cannot "prove me wrong" if you cannot recognize and come to grips with the cogent and salient issue. You are simply attacking the messenger. You are simply trying to divert attention away from the central argument for which you have no answer or defense. That is not an intelligent and logical argument. I notice that the few intelligent people here ignore you, and that is what I shall do, henceforth.
