Texas Tribune: Drivers from Mexico may avoid charges on El Paso toll road

There are 9 comments on the El Paso Times story from Aug 27, 2012, titled Texas Tribune: Drivers from Mexico may avoid charges on El Paso toll road. In it, El Paso Times reports that:

As El Paso prepares for its first toll lanes, officials in the border city are struggling with a question that, for geographical reasons, has been less of a concern in Dallas, Austin or Houston, where toll roads are prevalent and proliferating: Will Mexican drivers get a free ride? El Paso will have an electronic tolling system, the same kind that ... (more)

Charge the Toll when they cross the bridge from Mexico to the US.

They pay no federal taxes so in effect they pay nothing to maintain any roads in the US.

Even if I am from out of state I pay federal taxes which in turn pay for infrastructure all over the US including El Paso.

Since the Mexico plates pay nothing in US taxes charge them a toll at the bridge.

If they live in El Paso with Mexico plates they are breaking the law and once again pay no tax. Start cracking down on those folks that live in EP but have Mexico plates (like the chick sh*t mayor of Juarez).

Bet there would be much less traffic in the El Paso area and the tolls become less critical.

The plumber actually said something that made sense today, he doubts the juarenos will pay the toll after all it's electronic and the state can't collect from another country. If the wets get pulled over for a traffic infraction and they owe money they will be released due to the fact we don't want to hurt their feelings. Same old bulls#it, just a different day.

I will place a facade styled license plate before I enter the toll road. And each week I will pick out a new Texas plate to assume its identity.

They are going to be a lot of people driving in teh toll lanes and never paying/ Put a see through rag on the front and rear plates and they will never be able to make the license number. The reason the chih plated vehicle will never pay the toll is the united states does not have a treaty with Mexico to be able to get the information from the plate registration. Would have to set there at the bridges and stop them upon entry to arrest them for failure to pay the tolls. Have to take them to a Justice of the peace as the municipal court judges would never allow them to be tried.

What do they do oer in J-Town when you don't pay your tickets? They take your license plate off your car right. Turn about is fair play. When they come across one of the bridges and has not paid their tickets right there and now. And I don't care how long the line gets or how much time it take to cross the border. If there is no treaty with Messsyco to bad. Second time they do that and get caught call Mater the Tow Truck have them get it back at the auto auction that should take care of the fines they owe.

TO confiscate the plates at the POEs would be very difficult and the noise made by the Mexican Consulate would have it stopped within hours. You have to be able to not only read the plate on the car but there is a verification sticker on the rear window. Both have to match. There is no way without the cooperation of the Mexican government to get the vehicle identification numbers and registration information and the Mexican government will not do that.

Don't they take plates off of Amercian cars over in Juarez if you don't pay your fines? Dosen't the Amercian Consulate rasie hell and have that stopped. I saw a article in the EPTimes last year about that. They had so many Texas Plates they were running out of room to store them. Change the rules then like give all the people working at the border crossings a week or two off after they lock the gates up when they leave. Might do the trick hey

TO confiscate the plates requires official authorization and would cause a ruckus if it happened during working hours. There is no way without the cooperation of the Mexican government to solve this problem and teens who go over on the weekend to drink are in serious jeopardy.
