[" MONDAY, Jan. 14, 2013 (HealthDay News) A new analysis challenges previous research that suggested teens put their long-term brainpower in danger when they smoke marijuana heavily.

Instead, the analysis indicated that the earlier findings could have been thrown off by another factor the effect of poverty on IQ.

The author of the new analysis, Ole Rogeberg, cautioned that his theory may not hold much water. "Or, it may turn out that it explains a lot," said Rogeberg, a research economist at the Ragnar Frisch Center for Economic Research in Oslo, Norway.

The authors of the initial study responded to a request for comment with a joint statement saying they stand by their findings. "While Dr. Rogeberg's ideas are interesting, they are not supported by our data," wrote researchers Terrie Moffitt, Avshalom Caspi and Madeline Meier. Moffitt and Caspi are psychology professors at Duke University, while Meier is a postdoctoral associate there.

Their study, published in August in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, attracted media attention because it suggested that smoking pot has more than short-term effects on how people think.

Based on an analysis of mental tests given to more than 1,000 New Zealanders when they were 13 and 38, the Duke researchers found that those who heavily used marijuana as teens lost an average of eight IQ points over that time period. It didn't seem to matter if the teens later cut back on smoking pot or stopped using it entirely.

In the short term, people who use marijuana have memory problems and trouble focusing, research has shown. So, why wouldn't users have problems for years?

"The question reminds me of something adults say when kids make weird faces:'Careful, or your face will stay that way,'" Rogeberg said. "It is certainly possible that in the long term, heavy cannabis use has permanent or persistent effects on the brain. But to find out what these changes are and what they mean is not easy. We can't just look at the short-term effects and assume that these gradually become fixed and permanent over time."]

See the results may say one thing but some scientists who are on the side of marijuana can make any statistic lie for them. There are many who live in poverty who given the same food and circumstances will be able to maintain a very good IQ Level. Marijuana may not decrease the IQ of a person but there is no doubt that it does interfere with the cognitive abilities of those who smoke marijuana frequently. Stuff it in your pipe Beto O'Rourke. making weed legal will not help with the education levels needed to attain equality with the other nations.

Smoking that fancy stuff causes cancer too - just look at Sherm Helmsley. He's dead now. Also, it's never too late for people to change and turn over a new leaf. I know a lot of people are praying that you will do exactly that, Mr. Russell.

This is not TRUE! marijuana did not Kill Sherman Helmsley, marijuana does not cause Cancer, their are No Statistics To Prove That Marijuana causes cancer or that people have died from smoking marijuana.
People might kill each other over marijuana; like stealing someones dope or robbing them for their dope.
Bob Marly might be known as the only casualty from smoking dope but he smoked a hell of alot of weed dat and night.
People spread false rumors about smoking weed all the time, and maybe smoking weed isn't for everybody. Face It! some people just can't handle on how to have a good time.
Some people are bread into growing up to be snitches and sissys, while others still pee while they are asleep in bed; Known As Bed Wetters!
The Government Lies to everyone about smoking pot, they just keep making excuse after excuse; marijuana is not the gateway drug.
Marijuana has good uses both recreational and medical. Beer makes you FAT and lazy, cigarettes get you addicted then they kill you and second hand smoke does kill as well.
We should all pray that marijuana is legalized and that they stop prosecuting marijuana users and that the Texas State Law Makers get their heads out of their asses.

How dare you disagree with JW Russell! You must be some kind of weasel low life. He's the resident expert here and if you cross him, he will leave you butt up with a flower in it.

Cigarettes and second smoke cause cancer and kills people.

If you believe the study about cigarettes and cancer, why wouldn't you believe weed does the same? Both require inhaling and produce second hand smoke. Studies have shown 1 joint is equal to twenty cigarettes.

Smoke it if you want, but don't overlook the facts. Weed comes with consequences.

Spam this DEA chain letter elsewhere. Somebody needs to make money from banning marijuana, but only retards believe this tripe.;

Go ban alcohol if you're worried about dropping IQ scores, since there's actual, peer-reviewed science behind alcohol killing braincells, and no such thing for cannabis.

Okay, so what happens when all the marijuana toking idiots decide to drive under the influence? What then happens when they injure, maim or kill some one because their judgement is off while driving? What happens when the marijuana freaks pick a a gun and fire it off to see what happens and kill someone? Marijuana usage properly regulated for pain management is one thing but just for recreational usage. Now that is insane.

This is the one point I agree with you on. I saw on TV last week about a kid who was toking on a reefer and he wanted to give his friends a ride. He said, "Get in because I'm rd hot." One girl did and another girl didn't because she said, "You better slow down or you'll end up ice cold." He barreled through an intersection after that and ran over an old lady. He really had egg on his face after that.

There is no such thing as people walking into hospitals and saying;
Doctor! I am dying because I smoke to much marijuana.
The difference with inhaling marijuana as oppose to inhaling cigarette smoke are totally two different matters with seperate side effects.
If you are a smart enough smoker to smoke high quality marijuana that is grown by profesionals experts. No harm should come to you, except if you get caught by those worthless Texas Infidel Law Makers that cheat on the wifes; That is where your consequences comes from. Jail Time!
If you buy marijuana that comes from Mexico!that is not a good choice; you don't know what they put in to it. For sure there are harmful chemicals in it.
Even if you smoke marijuana containing seeds is bad for you; smoking marijuana with seeds will always give you a head ache and maybe even lower your sperm count.
As oppose to smoking cigarettes! there are nearly 500 different kinds of chemicals in cigarettes including rat poison.
I will tell you that smoking just one joint is not equal to smoking twenty cigarettes! THAT'S WHAT THE CRITICS WANT YOU TO BELIEVE!!! A Bunch of Stupid Liars.

IT'S LIKE THIS?
Our Government "HAS LIED TO US" for way to long! By keeping marijuana illegal, it has become a cash cow for the Courts, the Judges, the jails the Lawyers, the Prisons, the parole officers evrybody has their stinking hands in busting and prosecuting good people just because they smoke weed.
What law makers don't realize is that they have to keep building more jails; when they could use their resources for better use.
Legalizing marijuana will really put a huge dent to all the smugglers and cartels.
Those people up in Washington State and Colorado are way to intelligent. I agree with you 100%! Canadian Marijuana is awesome!

You sound extremely ignorant about the effects of cannabis, and this is exactly why people like you lost the debate; because the DEA and private prisons are going to need someone that doesn't sound extremely ignorant on their side to try to sell the drug warrior story. Neither sativa nor indica varieties have any such effect. You must be thinking about alcohol, of which everything you say applies to, but multiplied 100 times.
