IT is time to bust the myth that the Italian found this country. He was maybe the fourth or fifth sailor to find the "new" world. There were those who came here into the north via Greenland who were Vikings and Irish who found and in some cases settled here between the 10 century 10 the 13th century. There were also some french who sailed here and fished off the northern coast. All the Italian did was bring death and disease to the "new" world and killed those who came overland from Russia and Mongolia through the land bridge when the temperatures were so low the ice froze year round between Alaska and Russia 18,000 to 20,000 years ago.

Lets change the name of the "holiday" to discovery day or explorers' day. Then we could celebrate the days without all the fuss and muss that irritates all of the Native Americans.

Congratulations to Columbus for killing off millions of native peoples by bring your diseases with you. And the spaniards who came and killed off hundreds of thousand on Central and south American native peoples.

You have a screw loose. Eric the Red was a barbarian who subjugated women. We're sure as hell not going to have a holiday to honor some mongoloid either. Let's leave things the way they are and try to make peace with it.

I said let us celebrate the day of the explorers not just one specifically. The Vikings were barbaric at the time and they raided and pillaged northern Europe and England. But having said that many settled down and farmed and raised animals here on the northern coasts. They did not automatically subjugate the native populations as did the hideous racial hating spaniards.

If you think about it, those times are no different then what we do now to our fellow human beings. It's the nature of things.
