My husband and I came from VA on orders to Bliss. I have a BS in Business Management with emphasis on Human Resources. I have applied again and again for positions that I very much so qualify for. But you see. the rest of the U.S. would like for you to list additional languages on your resumes, whereas, El Paso would like you to list the fact that you only speak English on your resume. So as legitimate "born and raised" Americans that chose to learn French versus Spanish or only understands English arrives in El Paso to feel as if they live in Mexico. American organizations are smart in knowing that they can offer lower wages to immigrants and have them conduct positions that tolerate spanish only speakers. Yet at the same time, doing so only hurts the American economy.
Don't get me wrong, I love the weather in El Paso and the mountains are beautiful. But to be "proud people" why would you let this city look like shit all the TIME? Beer bottles along the sidewalks, bright tacky colors, military hating ignorance, high prices for shitty services, and every hispanic I have met down here thinks that everything should come cheap like Mexico but everything they offer is of high quality. Oh and not to mention coyotes (not the animal but human predators). You hate the military presence, border patrol, and anything that could potentially stop your relatives from just coming over and most of all you hate Americans. I have been listening to this ignorant shit for over a year now. "Proud people" if you are so proud to be Mexican and hate Americans go back to Mexico. Try to make a great life there. Also, keep in mind that while you dislike military presence here, they bring higher paying jobs than the places that allow spanish only speakers.
Seeing all this shit makes me wish that the military only hired military (dependents, family members, etc.) so that when we are relocated to an employment shit hole like El Paso we still have a strong chance to gain employment.
As for Canada, well they have their shit straight. They are not fleeing Canada because they are unable to control their own country. We are actually considering going there. Especially considering that drugs, human trafficking, and gang violence are much less likely to happen along their borders as they would along El Paso's borders. If you were proud, alive, and strong you would return to your country and fight for it like Americans have done time and time again. But until you proud Mexicans grow some huevos and fight for the country you came from it will remain third world regardless of what Mexican scholars refer to Mexico as. And no this is NOT hate, this is pure truth. I am part hispanic but I have seen many areas away from El Paso Texas and this place is not a place to be proud of. If anything the spanish speaking requirements only hurts El Paso coupled with all the hate and intolerance for Americans. Eventually El Paso will be like Laredo (the third world bleed over into America). But this should be pointed out. America will only tolerate this for so long before they place fenced borders lined with motion sensing weapons and or devise a strategy that truly separates Mexico from America.
So enjoy it will you can. In the meantime, good people in the military will look for ways to get the hell out of El Paso and back to America.
You have a lot to say about my home and unfortunately most of what you say is true. I've been here over 5 decades and it was'nt always like this. I've worked all over this country and have never met more friendly people then there is here. Don't judge the rest of us over a bad encounter or the fact you can't find employment here. I hope you can find peace here or where ever you end up.

I refuse to speak that dirty spanish language. It's all English for me and my friends. The spanish speakers can go back to Mexico. Whenever someone speaks to me in spanish, I speak to them in English. It's not up to me to learn spanish, It's up to them to learn English. We're in America ya lazy bums, not that cesspool Mexico. Learn the languich!

I recently bought Rosetta Stone to learn Spanish. I don't need a job as I am retired but I'm hoping to score with a spicy Latina sometime. I heard that some of them like older men, even if they are balding, and I've got a thing for them. So I'm hoping that the language lessons will help me get some south of the border, if you know what I mean.

Cont from prev. bad behavior is the norm here when children are around. As I said before the percentage is 90 to 95%. I don't know how much longer we will stay here but know that as long as I am here I WILL CONTINUE TO act nicer to El Paso than it has treated me! And if any of you travel outside of El Paso and I am your nurse, neighbor or co-customer in a store rest assued I will not be rude to you refuse to communicate with in a manner you are comfortable with nor will I speak rudely to you nor rudely about you in my native language. And be confident that I will not bother anyone here to demand I be treated politely I am very used to be ignored and tolerated when I am in public here. By the way looks or poor hygiene isn't the issue....I modeled for years in other cities in the US. My post is just an FYI to people that don't know this part of the world.

Geeez lady what side of the city do you live in? You must be writing about the east side of El Paso because I don't see that in the west, central or north east sides of the city. Are you white or black? I am anglo, male, originally from CT and I been here for about 12 years and I have never expereinced what you are writing about. Are you sure that you are writing about all of El Paso? Or are you just PO because of one lousy experience. If you are in fact a nurse you can get work anywhere in this city and you don't have to know Spanish. Hell nurses get up to 15k sign up bonuses at some jobs. I am seriously doubting your story.

I know a non-Spanish speaking guy who was turned down for a job in construction. The interviewers told him the truth: Spanish is necessary because none of the supervisors speak English.

Language is not really important. It is just jibber jabber to conceal the lack of communication skills. If you really want to survive in El Paso, study the skill of rudeness. You will always be surrounded by it in El Paso. No matter what language you speak, always guess at what the speaker is saying because he/she is probably unintelligible anyway. If you don't understand a question, stare at the questioner like a deer in the headlights and then ignore him. After a misunderstanding, always blame the ensuing consequences on the customer, the boss or anyone except yourself. Once you master the skill of rudeness, you are on your way to assimilating in El Paso.

Some people would probably laugh and say its not our fault for not speaking English. The truth is its just pathetic and the truth. Its reality. How can an ad mention nothing about Spanish being a requirement yet when an individual is interviewed they tell you Spanish is required.

That may work in certain settings but not everywhere. For instance, try picking up a hooker if you don't speak Spanish. Believe me, I know because I picked one up expecting only to get a handjob but she eventually did an around the world deal on me and even used her strap on. So be careful or you'll end up like me - butt up with a flower in it.

You might visit Fort Bliss National Cementary and take note of the people from El Paso that that died for America before you make an ignorant comment. Also, maybe if you learned how to capitalize proper nouns you could do better in your job search.

If you weren't so ugly you could try your luck at being a topless dancer. They don't care if you speak English or Spanish and besides that most El Paso men love fat women like you.
