I have been searching for a job here in El Paso and everytime I find something that I think I may be interested in, they want someone who is bilingual. I only speak ENGLISH and I have a lot of experience in various fields but gee whiz, I don't have the time or the desire to learn how to speak another language. Guess I'll just suck it up!!!

I can assure you you'll find a job if you're willing to suck it up and you won't have to speak Spanish either. Make your intentions clear when you go to the interview by wearing a low cut top and bright, red lipstick. Lots of Mexican bosses love to see the contrast of your lily white skin and bright red lips against their olive, latin member. Good luck!

No one in El Paso speaks "Spanish" (the European language spoken in Spain). Companies that wish to hire Spanish speakers go to Miami.

We know, don't we sister, JA? In my job I also wear a mini-skirt and look for excuses to bend over to look at something and watch those aqueous bulging coffee-brown eyes of the El Paso fat-ass gordos nearly pop out of their macho heads. If I wear a blonde wig and use the name "Linda," it helps even more. I gotta be careful tho, because if my clients want anything other than French and try to disrobe me, I am in danger of showing my tiny wee wee and the game is over. Those gringo truckers pay a lot more than these chipeskeit pochos, so I ply my trade out there most of the time and I only do the barrio for a change of scenery. You are right, the pot-belly pochos prefer the superior white, but the gringos like the diversity of my brown nalguitas.

Being bi-lingual is not a requirement for a job in El Paso. You simply just need to speek mexican.(You notice I didn't say spanish because these people here don't speak spanish. It's some street slang border trash talk.) If being bi-lingual were a true requirement for employment, then you would be able to speak english on the job so people can understand you. Reverse descrimination at its best. What would be the outcry if a job requirement was to speak intelligible english?

The work place today is the workers need to speak the language of the people where you work. Speaking Spanish is never a requirement but a demand here a;though they need to say prefer you to speak mexican or spanglish. The police force and the fire department do not require mexican to do their jobs. Would be nice but you don't get paid extra for it. People in the schools should teach conversational spanish (mexican)in teh schools. Why do you need to learn to write spanglish and then show you know how to conjugate the verbs? This is pure discrimination on the part of the business owners.

I won a business and I don't give a hoot in hell what the requirements are. If someone doesn't speak Spanish they can't service my customers and have no place in my organization. It's the 21st century, despite what Biden says, and it's a global economy.

That is my point. Any job that you apply for here in El Paso that requires talking to the general public, needs a person who can speak either ENGLISH or the language that these people speak around here in order to communicate. It's sad, but true.
BTW, please tell me how you WIN a business??? Did you mean to say that you inherited this business??? Perhaps I don't understand.

Spanish is necessary for most jobs in El Paso, but obviously, judging from the members of this forum, English is not. When El Pasoans stray out of their enclave and try to make it in some other city, they are an embarrassment to themselves. The El Paso accent of the natives and their inability to used proper English syntax is something that most of them never overcome. Americans will always be asking them what country they come from.

I'm sorry, young lady, that was a typo. I meant to write I "own" a business not that I won it. I got the o and w all mixed up.

Interesting, in that American business along the French-Canadian border don't require French. And the French sector law requires that government agencies and private business speak French ONLY. Even if the employee speaks English.

What is annoying is local employees becoming angry or difficult when the customer doesn't speak Spanish. Wal-Mart employees do speak English but in some cases have to be forced to speak English and give people, that are Hispanic in appearance, a dirty look. It doesn't occur to them that other nationalities look like Hispancs and don't speak Spanish.

What in the sam hill are you talking about? How the Frenchies or Canadas conduct themselves is of no relevance to this discussion. Those people are always swishing around, concerned only with the wine or beer, and don't understand a culture like ours. Hispanics are a proud people, full of life and deserve to be treated with respect. You're the type of person who promotes the Ugly American stereotype and gives the rest of us a bad name.

There is no requirement to be "bilingual" the only requirement is that you speak Spanish.

Many many businesses have cashiers or service people that don't speak English at all.

That's why el Paso is turning into a Mexican shithole.

My husband and I came from VA on orders to Bliss. I have a BS in Business Management with emphasis on Human Resources. I have applied again and again for positions that I very much so qualify for. But you see. the rest of the U.S. would like for you to list additional languages on your resumes, whereas, El Paso would like you to list the fact that you only speak English on your resume. So as legitimate "born and raised" Americans that chose to learn French versus Spanish or only understands English arrives in El Paso to feel as if they live in Mexico. American organizations are smart in knowing that they can offer lower wages to immigrants and have them conduct positions that tolerate spanish only speakers. Yet at the same time, doing so only hurts the American economy.
Don't get me wrong, I love the weather in El Paso and the mountains are beautiful. But to be "proud people" why would you let this city look like shit all the TIME? Beer bottles along the sidewalks, bright tacky colors, military hating ignorance, high prices for shitty services, and every hispanic I have met down here thinks that everything should come cheap like Mexico but everything they offer is of high quality. Oh and not to mention coyotes (not the animal but human predators). You hate the military presence, border patrol, and anything that could potentially stop your relatives from just coming over and most of all you hate Americans. I have been listening to this ignorant shit for over a year now. "Proud people" if you are so proud to be Mexican and hate Americans go back to Mexico. Try to make a great life there. Also, keep in mind that while you dislike military presence here, they bring higher paying jobs than the places that allow spanish only speakers.
Seeing all this shit makes me wish that the military only hired military (dependents, family members, etc.) so that when we are relocated to an employment shit hole like El Paso we still have a strong chance to gain employment.
As for Canada, well they have their shit straight. They are not fleeing Canada because they are unable to control their own country. We are actually considering going there. Especially considering that drugs, human trafficking, and gang violence are much less likely to happen along their borders as they would along El Paso's borders. If you were proud, alive, and strong you would return to your country and fight for it like Americans have done time and time again. But until you proud Mexicans grow some huevos and fight for the country you came from it will remain third world regardless of what Mexican scholars refer to Mexico as. And no this is NOT hate, this is pure truth. I am part hispanic but I have seen many areas away from El Paso Texas and this place is not a place to be proud of. If anything the spanish speaking requirements only hurts El Paso coupled with all the hate and intolerance for Americans. Eventually El Paso will be like Laredo (the third world bleed over into America). But this should be pointed out. America will only tolerate this for so long before they place fenced borders lined with motion sensing weapons and or devise a strategy that truly separates Mexico from America.
So enjoy it will you can. In the meantime, good people in the military will look for ways to get the hell out of El Paso and back to America.
