UTEP still top rated school for Hispanics

The University of Texas at El Paso is doing a better job of educating Hispanics than almost any other college in the country, according to a national trade magazine.

UTEP's Hispanic graduation rate is about as much of an accomplishment as a drunk falling into a large sinkhole. UTEP's student body is over 70% Hispanic to begin with, so naturally a large number of them will graduate. Am I missing something here?

Yes you are!!!---Of course I don't know what is either--lol I would think if UTEP has almost 15,000 Hispanics attending school and they have a high graduation rate then why aren't they #1 in all categories, except PHD's? Of course, they leave out info. regarding per cent of other Hispanics in other Colleges etc etc so percentage wise it might not be accurate. They should show the % of Hispanics graduating compared to the total number of Hispanic students. What is the % of Hispanic students graduating compared to the non-Hispanic students who graduate. Ehh, we could go on and on.

I really do not think that a large number actually graduate, compared to the number enrolled, but hey anything to promote the university, right? Also,(Yeah I know I am a little off topic) earning a degree really will not get you very far, especially in this backwards town. How many are graduating with education? How many are actually finding jobs as teachers here in El Paso? Well, inferring from the last teacher job, with a lot of applicants, and the empty booths representing the various districts, I would say that a degree is nearly worthless. It is just another mound of debt we have to deal with. Oh, yes, I am bitter...

And if exceptional graduates would be choosing a career as public school teachers in El Paso, that would be a hideous waste of talent. Even nationally the public school system is a disgusting joke, but in Texas, it's dire, worthless. Less than useless, it's actually an obstacle. And a poor town like EP is the perfect poster child of that fact. The public school system in this country really needs to be disbanded and rebuilt after the ones in Europe. That of course won't happen because the current mediocrity suits corporate society just fine. If you have children and can afford it, I suggest you forget about public schools and shop around for a good private one.

Thanks for being our winner, for fool of the day. You win a lifetime of envy towards all the UTEP grads out there making a killing off of their great degrees. You may now return to the grill, and I'd like fries with that.

Not being Hispanic,(but obtaining a Bachelor's and two Master's degrees from UTEP), I think I qualify to comment on the topic. Folks will say it takes longer to graduate. Yes, for my bachelors it took 5 years instead of 4, but I worked full time also. My Masters degrees ran concurrently and took 18 months. Folks will say the degrees are worthless. Well, depends on the degree and what you put into it. If you sat in class and waited to be spoonfed, then you probably should not have attended. If you changed majors because the degree requirements interfered with your social life, and the failing grades disqualify you from your grants, you should think about flippin burgers. Will you make 80k in your first year? Probably not unless you have a mentor or are related to the drug cartels. Is this a numbers game for UTEP, being the top Hispanic-educating college? Of course. Can the graduates get a job? Sure, if they're willing to leave town and actually work for a living. Face it folks, UTEP doesn't do the best of jobs in educating its graduates but there are worse ones around. It's all in the attitude of the graduates. And I would say that their attitude is self-defeating. IMHO. YMMV

The only reason UTEP grads arent making a killing of their degrees, is if they stay here in EL PASO. The problem isnt UTEP, its El Paso you dumbies. Why dumbie wants to saty in EL Paso to get a PhD in chemistry and then end up working at stupid/lame Western Refining?and end up earning thousands less than their counter parts in Austin or California or anywhere else. WAKE UP EL PASO! you are holding UTEP grads back. there is nothing here for us beyond UTEP.

ALL you arguing that UTEP sucks, well guess what: UTEP is about one of the only things El Paso has to offer. THats why no one stays here for grad school!! Anybody interested in going anywhere knows that going to grad school here at UTEP is like death (if you are getting any science degree other than engineering.) UTEP is losing all their science grads to UC berkley, A&M, UT, UCLA, and etc.

WAKE UP. IF UTEP SUCKS ITS BECAUSE EL PASO SUCKS.

Alyssa is exactly right, this place stinks. I also want to leave asap. I'm tired of all the bull around here. Hey, I'm sure this will be a wonderful safari vacation for the military personnel fresh out of farms who get stationed here, but I'm a civilian. There's virtually nothing attractive about El Paso. Some people move here to fill specialized jobs, the rest are just stuck. UTEP isn't really that bad of a school, but it's not nearly great enough to make El Paso. The opportunities are dire here, both for jobs and anything interesting happening. This town is just turning out to be the rest stop of illegal immigrants and ASARCO's trash bin. And it's not even the quiet little city that it used to be, it's noisy as hell.

From what school did you graduate with a 4.0? Your writing skills are atrocious! An slightly above average sixth grade student has a better grasp of English grammar. PLEASE leave El Paso. Your ignorance might be contagious.

OK lets get real--UTEP is a laughing joke for a higher educational institute. Of course there are students attending this "institution" who would do well at other places, but as a whole, the professors settle for mediocrity, because that is what El Paso is all about. I really don't think that there is anything to be proud of graduating from a university where the only way to get people to graduate and earn degrees is to fast track them. When I came to El Paso, I went on to earn another masters degree. I just finished a masters from another out of state university and worked my ass off. When I enrolled in another program to earn another masters at UTEP--- not once did I ever have to go to the library and do research. I ended up with a 4.0 gpa not doing a thing. It prepared me for absolutely NOTHING. Learned NOTHING--A waste of my money! I would never allow my kids to attend this joke of an institution that calls itself "JUTEP".

I take it you were not an English major. Your writing skills are substandard. If anyone should be embarrassed, it is the president of every educational institution from which you graduated (including "JUTEP").

William stop defelcting. Dont be jealous that Im actually getting an education that surpasses yours, it happens. If you choose to go to UTEP then you gotta stick with the sub-standard education, Im not going to UTEP anymore. I actually have some common sense, going to a private institution and getting a better education than UTEP could ever dream of offering.

BTW:the UTEP English department, invited me to be an enlish major. hahaa. a little indication about UTEP's standards.

I'm really sorry, ALyssa. You are so correct. I shall no longer be "defelcting" (whatever in the hell that means). I understand why the UTEP English Department staff invited you to be an "enlish" major; they certainly did not want you to be an English major.

Please tell me what private institution you are attending. I'm just curious.

There is no reason for a UTEP grad to stay in El Paso. Sure, a UTEP degree is not the best, but there are far worse places you could get a degree from. The short sightedness and fear of people to leave family behind is what holds people in El Paso. There is more to life than hanging with the home slices and la familia. Why UTEP wants to tout there Hispanic record is beyond me. It is useless to segment your self from the larger society. The inward view of militant hispanics that believe you are losing something because you assimilate in the white mans world is only fear and self loathing. As a UTEP grad I have fully assimilated elsewhere. As a matter of fact, I offered a UTEP grad a job and that person decided they did not want to leave the "chi-chi" as someone else said. A paid ticket to a higher paying job and a way out of El Paso was offered. Short sighted.
