During El Dorado High Schools Graduation Ceremony the Valedictorian's speach was rudely interrupted by the Principal who arrarently does not understand the concept of FREE Speach! It was her speach and not his. She is the person that reached the goal of valedictorian and even if the prinipal did not like her speach it was her speach to give and she earned it. Unless her pre-written speach which she re wrote several times in order to get this knucklhead prinicipals OK, had something totally inappropriate, it was her speach to give but he still wanted her to give the speach that either he or the school wrote for her. Due to the principals inappropriate action it was not the speach she wanted to give! What type of students does El Dorado want to produce, a bunch of mindless robots or students who are smart, do well in school and that can think, write and speak for themselves and in the case of this years valedictorian, she can do so very, very well. The rude and arrogant pompous principal needs to apologize to the valedictorian, her family, and the rest of the student body. HE WAS WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!

I guess you did not catch the news reports yesterday on KTSM and KFOX. They are probably still available on the Internet. Her speach was 3.5 minutes long and the school apparently wanted it to be only 2.5 minutes long. I heard her speach on the radio and it was in my opinion very good. Now as to who is telling the 100% true version is anybody's guess but I do feel that both sides could of dealt with the situation in a more cooperative manner. Having said that I also feel that the professionals (school officials) should of handled there end of it a whole lot better than the young lady did. I hope she uses this experience wisely and becomes a much better and inclusive adult as she continues her path to bigger and more wonderfull accomplishments.

Can you spell? Seriouslt speech, not speach. Hint if you type it and it is underlined in red - it means you spelled it wrong.

First of all, I would like to correct some errors by spelling the words above correctly: speech, apparently, principal. Second of all, the EDHS principal is a woman. Third, she did NOT re-write her speech over and over again. Obviously, you have no idea what is going on in this situation. Our principal had a good reason for interrupting her, and I can assure it is not because she didn't like the valedictorian's speech. Over 800 students graduated in the class of 2011. The Don Haskin's center was only rented out to EDHS for 1.5 hours because the MECHS graduation came right after ours. Clearly, time is a key issue here. The salutatorian, valedictorian, and all other speakers were given a speech length limit: one page, 14 point font. The valedictorian submitted a 2 page speech that clearly DOUBLED the length limit. The speech was cut to fit the length frame by administrators. Knowingly, Stephanie Paredes, the valedictorian, brought her own speech that exceeded the time limit and could jeopardize the smoothness of the entire ceremony. It was then that our principal asked her to stick with the script. It was wrong, arrogant, selfish, and condescending of Stephanie to break the rules, while everyone else followed them. Freedom of speech has nothing to do with this scenario because it is a private ceremony. If she wants to proceed to give a speech, she needs to comply with all the rules and regulations. I'm glad Mrs. Paugh, our principal, interrupted her. She needs to know there are rules to follow, and she can't go around doing anything she pleases.

Your story would be quite charming and informative except for the fact that it is filled with LIES! Stephanie is the victim here and she was horribly mistreated under the cruel oppression of the principal. Many of the students were upset about the speech going long just because they couldn't wait to get out of there and go to their beer parties. The principal treats everyone there like some kind of a sumbitch and gets her kicks by making the kids feel like a piece of dirt. About this there can be no debate and these facts will be born out in the days to come. In the meantime, there's a petition circulating to be presented to Dr. De la Torre to have the principal removed as soon as a few more signatures are collected.

"Horribly mistreated" and "cruel oppression"?

Boy you must live a sheltered life if you think the circumstances of this story rise to those levels.

Where I live has nothing to do with it, whether I live in a shelter or in a mansion or in a trailer. The poor girl was humiliated and degraded and made a laughingstock on national TV. I call that horrible mistreatment and cruelty, but that's partly because I have a keen eye for such things. You probably laughed your buns off at her injustice.

Nope didn't laugh at her, but am laughing at your reply. My comment had nothing to do with where you live physically. Considering the real cruelty that takes place everyday, every where across the globe, hell just across our border, you fell a HS Graduate being interrupted giving a speech that no one will even remember in 6 months is "horrible mistreatment"? Rude, wrong headed, unnecessary - sure. Humiliating and degrading? Hardly

Well, the joke's on you then because I'm laughing at you in return. You obviously have no sympathy for children and you're probably also the type of guy who chuckles when he sees a cat get run over by a car because it's just natural selection in play. If the principal was so incensed by the speech she could have discretely tapped her on the shoulder instead of angrily confronting her in full view of everyone. Common sense and politeness are not attributes that she possesses. But you'll be laughing out the other side of your butt when she's removed, which will surely happen before the next school year begins.

Her speech was over the allotted time by 1 minute?
Gosh don't go to any government "meetings" in El Paso, that principal would have a fit!

the problem is with large mega schools like el dorado where students are just a number and administration treats them as such. I agree with Lupe, the pompous arrogant and ill prepared principal needs to go, the sooner the better. i would send her back to head start along with the activities director.

To the Valedictorian: Character building is a b*tch!
As for the principal? You got to show up in force to School Board meetings *if* you want Anything done.
