I was a resident at Maclaren hall when I was about 12 yrs. old. In March of 2010 I got a lap top w/my income tax $, one of the first things I did w/ it was to look up Maclaren Hall, I found a picture of the front entrance,at the gate, looking up that long drive way,no sooner that I pulled it up I got company ,so I shut down my computer,a couple of days later I wanted to take a better look, but to no avail, the only pic I could find are of a christmas party from the late 50's, that place never put on parties, you were lucky if you got a letter or visit, that place was a nightmare for an already frightend girl, there was no one to comfort you. We were given jobs we had to do everyday befor we ate,it rotated, my favorite was the pixie wing,5yrs and under, we had to get the little ones up bathed and dressed, most of them would soil them selves, so the older kids were made to do the nasty jobs the staff didn't like doing, I didn't mind so much after they were cleaned up, then we had to change all of their beds,go eat then go to some school on the property,I was there less than a year but it seemed a lot longer! If any one out there knows where this place is,would some one please post a pic at the gate looking up the drive way, all pictures hav been removed since the place got shut down, It would mean alot to me,so I may be can stop the dreams that haunt me! thank you to any one who takes the time! good luck and God bless. Hello,
My name is Michael. I've been conducting some research on MacLaren Hall. I would love to ask you some questions about what you remember from the time you spent there. I'm looking for a child who was abducted in 1977 and I believe he ended up at Mac Hall in the late 70's early 80's. Below is the address for Mac Hall. I have some pictures as well. I can be reached via email @ michaelpresearch@gmail.com Thank you

I went to MacLaren in late 76 or early 77. From day one it was hell on earth. When I refused to allow a male doctor to do a pelvic exam on me I was forced into a isolation cell hog tied and striped searched in front of a male staff member. I was left hog tied in the cell with nothing on except my bra and panties untill I agreed to let the male doctor examine me. Christmas Time was the worst we would wake up and get to open presents that were donated get to play with them for an hour then they would be taken away never to be seen again. What a way to treat a child that was already abused.

Anyone who was abused while in MacLaren's care can contact me at revshayna@vzw.blackberry.net. I would love to be able to set up a support group for those who lived through the abuse at MacLaren.

Michael, My name is Colleen and I think I was in Mac Laren Hall in the early 1960's when I was 3 or 4, along with my brother who is 18 months younger than me. I went to a building in El Monte several years ago but it didn't "fit" my memory. I do remember a long driveway, memories of large dorm rooms & cells, and a large dining room with long tables. I would like to have copies of the pics.
Thanks.

I spent many years in and out of Maclaren Hall as a 10 year old, the last time when I was 16.. When I was put into a group home where I remained till I was emancipated. I was in the the first time in 1984 and the last time in 1990. The place was set up into "cottages" I was in Jr. Girls and Sr. Girls.. Although I remember disliking Maclaren and thinking about Awoling a lot for a kid like me there were not many places willing to take a "damaged" child. I was restrained and put into a timeout room..(a locked room with bare walls and floors) Now with the ability to look back I know that was done to protect myself and others. I was angry for the abuse that I suffered that put me there so I acted out terribly. As did most the people I was there with. Once I reliezed fighting and acting tough were not gonna help me get out, I changed.. Then the program went smoothly I enjoyed things that most people did, went on outings.. Met many celebrities (once a year they had a celebrity day) I watched Run DMC do a private concert inside the walls, they also would have tons of activities. They even took poloroid pictures of you with the different celebrities.. Some I still have to this day. The system may not have been perfect but I was not burned with coffee or ciggerettes, or beaten or touched when I went to sleep. So from where I came from it was "safe". Being a kid in the system for many years a total of 12 years.. This was not the worst place that I was. When I emancipated I got a full ride to college (With the help of my social worker) and I made something of me. I think life is what you make of it, I choose not let the circumstances of my childhood define who I am, this includes Maclaren Hall... I think everyone there was just trying to survive including the staff members who had to deal with such abused children, I could not imagine how hard that might be. I am 37 years old and I would not change who I am today.. I am married to my best friend, have great kids, and have a great career. I think this experience shaped me into the person that I am. I came on this form to connect with some of the great people I met while I was there.. If you were there during this time and story sounds familiar please reply.. Thanks Kylleen

I lived in the place during 1999 (15 yrs old) if I remember correctly. I entered foster care in 7th grade and moved many times. The real issue with foster system in general is the instability. I kid you not, I had been moved twice because I am caucasian and they felt I did not culturally fit in with some families. By no means am I inately psychologically challenged as many foster parents and social workers treated me. Goodness forbid if I made a stupid mistake typical of teens! Consequences for typical teenager behavior included groundation, whereas, a foster child would have revoked phone privileges to speak with family, groundation, and reports written up like a criminal. I think that is the best way to put it; we were treated like criminals. Mac, a facility--not a foster home; yet, it operated in such a way during my stay that I have deep respect for the staff of the girls cottage/wing/building. There were truly difficult-to-place-children who had disturbing psychological issues. It was the other girls, not the staff, who I feared. Most of them were ticking timebombs. I went to Mac for 3 months because I was in the middle of placements and look back at the facility with more fondness than what I may feel towards foster homes. I also want to state that I am well aware of scandals prior to my "stay". My heart goes out to all of you. I cannot help but feel you, ex foster children, are my family. We understand what it feels like to be alone, lost, and scared while at the mercy of very human social workers.

I was there in mid to early 80's apart of tigers H unit.I was seven it was an awful experience i was there three times while being shuffled from one group home to the next. Watching the bloody noses drip all your stuff being stolen. Then come the booty busters an awful bunch of older kids that lurked by the pool area. Ill never forget being told to watch out for them by my cellmate. Mac hall was nothing more than a training ground for hell to play. I never asked to be born but growing up there really made me wish i was dead. I still wake up asking to make head calls. But bill from day shift was cool and who could ever forget the great CC.
