I was talking with a local well-known elderly man in the greater el do area with a science background the other day about the popularity of Duck Dynasty. He said that it's so popular because it's a sucess story, the characters are funny and interesting and that most of the people in the nation are far removed from the hunting/fishing/outdoors lifestyle even though it's no big deal to us in the South. Then he said something I've never heard or thought of before. He said that that people in the South are largely English with anywhere from 1 to 25% American Indian which makes us a distinct racial group. That's why you can pick out a southerner just by looks pretty much anywhere in the US because we look different from the other caucasians. He said that a lot of the rest of the USA is of German descent with no Indian blood and that makes them totally different from people in the South in looks and actions. That's why "yankees" and Southerners don't get along so well. He said it was well documented years ago about the racial differences between northerners and southerners but it's not talked about any more because it's not politically correct. The key here in his opinion is that most northerners watch Duck Dynasty with a lot of disdain akin to honey boo boo ogling (like they are watching indigenous idiots)- laughing at us and not with us. Conversely, the southerners laugh with the Robertsons and can identify with them. I think he may be right.

Of course they're laughing at the shows about people from the sticks, they tell them to act stupid for the cameras. It reinforces the "southerners are uneducated hicks"stereotype and all the while the commanders along with the rest of the paid idiots profit from making te rest of the south look like fools. It's not like you need someone to tell you the obvious.

From age 5-80. And maybe it aint no big deal to us because everything they do we all grew up doing and still do today so its our normal life n seems like no big deal huntin and fishin and doin the woods thing. But we aint on tv.They are! And people are loving it so quit haten.

I fail to see the appeal of the show. Everyone in South Ark knows similar characters...many of which are more entertaining.
To get A&E on board they needed the Beards, Beverly Hillbillies rags to riches remake, and football background.
All of this is very entertaining to outsiders but I can't stand it. Maybe because this looks like everyone I know in South Ark. However, despite the popularity, I give it one more season before ratings fall off a cliff.
Thoughts?

For the following, we must try to be mindful that this took place before he found The Lord. I have learned from a semiretired man who was a customer at the time that the bar was The Hill. I was only in it once and did not realize it had racially segregated sections. Though he was not present for the incidents, he heard from witnesses that Ty Peace's mother, from whom Robertson was leasing, began raising hell about something. Robertson picked her up by the seat of her pants and her collar, walked with her to the door, and tossed her through it. When Ty's father, Joe, came to defend Dorothy's honor, Robertson beat the f**k out of him. Robertson then collected his family and moved back to Louisiana.

I was telling this to someone last night. Ty ( he's been materializing for a few days around the first of the month, Monday night when the power was out downtown, he mostly stayed outside on a sidewalk bench, claiming to be afraid of the dark ) was sitting next to me. Ty asked, "Do you know what I'd do if I ran into Phil Robertson?" What? "Not a dam* thing."

This show is a giant hit for reasons I haven't figured out yet. I see that Phil Robertson used to run a 'honky-tonk' bar near here. Was that the Long Branch?

The Hill. There I was, returning empty handed from FedEx Motor Freight in E. Camden Friday Dec. the 13'th ( they were still jammed up from the ice ). A person was walking south on the shoulder of Scenic Hwy. 7 in what was once Cullendale. As I passed, I looked and saw a possibly familiar bearded face. Glancing in the rear view, I saw him jumping and wildly waving with his five foot long walking staff in his left hand. No, I'm not going to do it. Guilt began to gnaw at me. It was cold. By the time I reached the light at Fairview, I decided to go back. Don't see anyone, but as I crossed the tracks, I caught a glimpse of movement of a color that did not match the surrounding vegetation maybe twenty-five yards down the overgrown right of way. Think, oh great, he's probably doing #2 and doesn't have paper. Turned back south at Steel Deals. He's back on the road shoulder. Slow to make sure, at worst, it's him. Stop. He runs, throws staff in back, climbs in saying he hasn't run that far in years, maybe 100 feet. I first make him agree on a destination. Verizon. El Dorado? Yes. Is there a Verizon store in Camden? Yes, but he says it's near McDonalds, and he does not like that location. Spent the previous night in the Camden Walmart. He talks about trying to get back to his roots and something about a litter of mixed Poodle and Labrador puppies. I suggested he make his way to Monroe, find Jenna, pay her some of the money he owes her, camp there, start hanging around the Duck Commander factory, maybe one of them will recognize him, give him a job in the factory or put him in a scene with Sy and Samurai swords. He talked of reopening his father's liquor store and how near it is to wet territory. Ty said he'd known those boys since they were that high, used to duck hunt and kill way over the limit with them in a blind near Huttig. He made circles by touching the tips of both thumbs and forefingers saying his fathers eyes were swollen up that big, "he beat the sh*t out of him. Robertson is lucky to be alive. That .38 was right there under the truck seat." I also learned that Ty's first job was at Bernice Steak House. He had me let him off at Payless so he could approach Verizon on foot.

I call BS on this...I was raised in Ohio and Indiana....until I became a transplant to the South, but still a "yankee", married a Southern man...been here for years....visit W. Monroe and Monroe FREQUENTLY. My niece in Ohio loves Duck Dynasty. Bottom line, it has NOTHING to do with North or South, and everything to do with their religious, family, and work ethic values that SOME Americans are hungry for now days. Oh, sometimes I say "you guys" and sometimes I say "ya'll"....best of the North and South :-)

Not much good comes from the North. Glad you were able to get out of that hellhole.
