"EL DORADO — There have been a lot of questions concerning potential fishery impacts of the Calion Lake drawdown. The five-foot drawdown was conducted from spring 2012 through early 2013.
Union County conducted the drawdown to allow them to repair and replace components of the lake’s water level control structure.
Calion Lake is a reservoir located just over 11 miles from El Dorado. Anglers find a variety of fish including redear sunfish, warmouth, channel catfish, yellow bass, gar, sunfish, largemouth bass, crappie and bluegill.
The drawdown was intended to be short term, but due to unusually dry weather in late 2012, it lasted several months longer than anticipated. A major, long-term drawdown has the potential to have negative impacts on fish communities. However, sampling results from a survey conducted March 20, 2013, show no negative effects on the bass population..."
