California Chrome became the early 3-5 favorite on Wednesday to win the Belmont Stakes and become horse racing’s 12th Triple Crown champion and first in 36 years. WoooHoo!

Go California Chrome! You can do it!

The official drink of the Belmont Stakes:

1.5 ounces of bourbon (Belmont uses Knob Creek)
2 ounces of lemonade
1 ounce pomegranate juice

Shake vigorously with ice and serve in a rocks glass over ice. Garnish with a lemon twist or red cherry.

It was a disappointing race, but sometimes a fresh legged horse can beat a two time event winner. Maybe someone here on the forum that understands the politics and rules of the Triple Crown can help me out and explain that the contenders that race In The Belmont did not necessarily race in the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness.

CC looked fatigued. This is why there hasn't been a TC winner in 36 years. Maybe it's time to change some of the rules.

I was hoping California Chrome could do it, but it wasn't to be. IMO just too many races with not enough rest in between. Oh well, he's a great fella that gave us a great show.

It's just weird that some of the horses do not even have the points to run the Derby, but can compete in the Belmont, which, more times than not, causes an upset.

The field should not be open for horses to compete mid series.:(

I agree, the field at the Blemont should only be open to horses who have run the first two legs of the triple crown. There was certainly big money paid out yesterday to the win, place and show horses. Hummm, sure makes you wonder if that's the whole idea?

When big money is involved, anything is suspect. CC came in 4th place, but I didn't realize he was injured by a gash to his foot. However, 3 races in 5 weeks was too much for that young colt. The whole premise of the TC is to test stamina and other horses have achieved it. They aren't going to just give that honor away.

I was a little surprised at the owners reaction. He had to have known the rules before he agreed to run his horse in the Kentucky Derby. A team of contract attorneys didn't explain it to him? He entered into a written agreement with the parties to follow their protocol. I do see his position, however, but he's not going to un-ring that bell.

It was still a great race and a beautiful evening!

Yeah coming out of the gate he got cut by the other horse. I think this had alot to do with his performance. Lost $2,500 on that race. I guess i wanted him to win more than i thought?

That's a large amount to lose, however I don't know how much you might have put down on the other races. Hopefully you still came out ahead.I felt fairly confident CC would win, but kept hearing about how a fresh legged horse could beat him. I didn't bet on any of the three races, but I had a rather lively party crowd at my house Saturday night that did. I'm not much of a gambler, but have been to Vegas a couple of times. I don't really understand playing the odds, so if I don't know what I'm betting on, I stay away. Better luck next time with the bet!

The 3 races are individual races...if you qualify you can run. They draw the best horses of the season due to their million dollar plus purses....the Triple Crown was formed as a result of this...it's a "blanket" association...
The rules have always been the same....
If a trainer has a distance horse, he is not gonna run it in the first two "short" races, he knows he'd lose....he's gonna go for the Belmont.....
Coburns suggestion of the horses running be limited to the horses going for the TC makes sense on one hand, but it takes away from the greatness of a triple crown winner...under his suggestion there would be a TC winner most every year....a average good horse...
As is, it takes a GREAT horse to win the TC,,,but ,due to specialized breeding such a horse doesn't exist anymore, they're all breed to run certain distances and win MONEY! They're are no "all round" horses anymore.....
This is why the short race quick horses can't win the Belmont, after they win the first two short races....
Should they change the rules? Probably..but the "greatness" of a triple crown winner will be gone, there will be one most every year then...
Secretariat won the first two quick races....then he increased his workouts by 2 seconds a day while warming up for the Belmont....and won it by 33 lengths....he was the last of the great horses.
There are just no great horses anymore,,,,due to mans "intelligent specialized breeding"...
In my option, it should remain as is...if a great horse comes along, well have another "original" TC winner.....

Thank you for taking the time to post that explanation I see your point, and it makes sense. I'm sure a horse will come along one day and take the crown.
