As a UCAPS Board Member we love to hear your comments. I have read through all of the comments and would like to answer most of them. First of all, it was costing us around $10,000.00 a month to house, feed, give shots, vet bills, pay employees, pay bills and etc. Around 20 years ago, we were left a large donation in a will. To my understanding, some was put in a trust fund and some was used to build the shelter that is currently being used. Through the years, most of that money was used to run the shelter when donations were low. Billshave to be paid regardless. If we had more volunteers that would donate their time to help with the animals, the payroll wouldn't be so high. Our main donations came from the City, County, Murphy Foundation and private donors. Those donations would run the shelter for about 4 months. We no longer receive funding from the City of El Dorado.
As far as the outside runs, most of those dogs are outside dogs. Why get them used to heat and air when their new owner will put them outside. It is always good if they do get a good home that lets them stay inside. For years, in the winter, the outside runs have been wrapped in the material that is used for chicken houses. That helps block out some of the cold winter wind. Hay cannot be used in the dog houses because it stops up the drains. They are supposed to put blankets in the outside dog houses for the short haired dogs. Ken Jones and the Sheriff's Department has been a life saver when our funds got really low. No, the County has not taken over UCAPS, but Ken Jones has helped us out by sending out inmates that are on work detail and they help clean up after the animals. That has helped us cut down on payroll, so our expenses are lower. We have cut out 2 employees at For Pet's Sake, our resale shop where we take in donations of clothes, furniture and other household items. We are now open Wed. through Sat. 9 to 5. All of the money that is taken in there goes to pay bills and operate the shelter, like CCAPS in Magnolia. The shelter has cut down to 3 to 4 employees. The Board of Directors voted to try and cut down the animal population to around 150. We used to house 250-300 animals. We had to cut expenses so we could stay open. We are not a no-kill shelter, but we would like to be. It is up to the manager and the employees that work with the dogs everyday to decide if the dogs are adoptable.

Topix can't know anyone's name, and an IP address isn't personal information. It also doesn't have an age. Good luck getting suddenlink or at&t to tell you who the IP address belongs to without a warrant.

My computer does not show post 23 & 24. It skips to 25 & 26. Does 23 & 24 show up on your computer? It shows up on my laptop, but not my home computer. Just wanted some feedback.

Thanks for answering. I had posted the rest of the UCAPS information in #23. If nobody else can read it, I will repost it. It told about the next spay-neuter clinic and some other information.

i know a bunch of people that tried to adopt cats at ucaps and were told the ones they wanted werent available. there was one in a cage in the front that i wanted too but they said no theyd rather make it to live in a cage its hole life. i been goin there for years and keep seein the same cats for probly 4 years and some of them are real mean. why would you keep a mean cat in a cage for that long? thats jsut cruel. it aint gonna get a home but you keep a cage full so a nice cat cant be taken in and find a home. that place is run by a cat horder or somethin.

Which cat are you talking about? We release some of the cats that we get fixed that aren't adoptable. They are released at the Cat House to live their lives free. Cats can also be adopted from the Cat House.

Jim, I'm glad you asked that question. Firstly, we were without a dialtone for three days due to corrosion in the line. ATT came out and fixed the problem. Secondly, we are busy cleaning kennels seven days a week and taking care of the animals all day, especially in the morning from 8-12. Along with that, we are busy aswering the multitude of phone calls that come in daily in regards to abandoned animals. At night before I leave, I pull the phone cord out so my office pup doesn't decide to chew the line. If you have a question or would like to adopt a pet, here'a an idea: visit the shelter at 1000 Sunset Road (Wed-Sat 12-5), we are there, working nonstop. If our schedules conflict, since your comuter savvy, contact us through facebook under Union County Animal Protection Society. I hope I've answered your question: "What's with that?"

It didn't, because I like being a random, complaining jackass when I don't have to use my real name and be held accountable for it. It is easy to whine like a little bitchgirl than come up there to help volunteer my time and answer the phone. That takes too long, and I'm too busy scratching myass and stuffing ky fat face with food. It only takes 5 seconds to post the question: "what's up with that?" See why I chose that path?

The recent shooting of Sarah the dog has brought up another topic that has been bothering me for some time. We visited UCAPS (Union County Animal Protection Society) in the hopes of adopting a pet and I was really saddened by all of the outdoor dog pens. The dogs were kept in freezing cold runs (many with ice freezing on the floor). The workers had tried to put tarps around the pens to keep out the cold and there were some space heaters (which is a fire hazard). I'm sure this summer that the pens will be scorching hot. I know that these are just surplus animals and that many of them will be euthanized....but is this really the best we can do for them? Is there city money that could be allocated to build an indoor facility? Is this something that is even important to the community? With the number of stray dogs around the area...do people just not value animals?
Maybe give them some money? They run on donations only. You cant release them back into the wild. What good would that do? NONE. Those animals love it there. Freezing rain or hot sticky summers. Better than have to kill and fight for food. Plus, they are dogs. They have fur and do not feel pain in the exact same way as humans. They can put up with it otherwise they wouldn't be in it. Again, give them money if you want to bash UCAPS. Better yet, work there and see what they have to work with. They do it for the animals. Everything.

<quoted text>I have just read the comment made about UCAPS. I know first hand that money that has been given to UCAPS has been used for other purposes. I was told at one time that some of the wealthest people made donations of sizable proportions, however instead of putting back into the shelter, it was used for investments. When asked for a donation from the city to UCAPS, the board of directors refused to turn over financial records. This to me just proves that money is being misused. UCAPS is one of the poorest animal shelters in the state of Arkansas. It really needs new management and leaders or directors and has been needing this for years.
At a certain time, yes, it wasn't the best. But now? You will not find a place that has people that love the animals more than the workers at UCAPS. Funds are always a problem and they do damn good at using what they have.

I recently had to take my kitty MR fluffers to ucaps to be adopted by a better family because apparently, and i didn't know this until recently, it is not a good thing to bury your cat in the ground up to it's head and spray it with a water hose even if it is a lot like sea world without the man eating whales.
I miss poor mr fluffers. At least I still have all my other 15 cats and 3 ferrets and 16 bunnies and 3 dogs and a mini horse and a pony and a moose and a geese and a turtle with a gerbil taped to it's back so if it falls over it doesn't have to worry.
Hahahahahaha, I'm sorry I love animals very much but that is just funny!!
