It is what it is.

I'd say it is a upgrade if you are moving from Pine Bluff or Memphis.

I'm 55 and I grew up in EL DO, the daughter of a prominent business man. I loved growing up in El Do in the 60's and 70's but I left in 1980 because El Do offers nothing in the way of life style to anyone other than marrieds with children or seniors. Not all of us wanted to get married and have kids.
I was active in the wonderful community little theatre, South Ark Arts Center (SAAC) because I love theatre but if you are not into theatre then there isn't a lot of good adult activity there to enjoy during the year other than football games. That is a shame. El Do needs a night life which would help in attracting people. I'm not a go to the bar and hang out kind of gal by nature but if that is the ONLY place to get out and socialize then you kinda forced to go.
Nothing wrong with going to the bar but in a small cultural town like El Do, there should be businesses open that cater to a night life for adults besides some sleezy little hole in the wall bar. Downtown is cute and adorable by day but after work is just shuts down for the most part. A few eateries are open on the quaint, newly redone (since I lived there) square but they close early still leaving nothing for those who like to get out at night to socialize.
Most of the family activities in El Do revolve around church activities and there are plenty of churches to choose from. I think EL DO is a great place to raise kids but if you are single, El Do offers nothing for you.

Well, not all of us hate kids or want to be alone. There is plenty of style here, as well as plenty of activities of all varieties. I spent my first 35 years here single before getting hitched. Loved every minute of it. Now, I have a great wife and kids, and my time in my 40s have been the best time of my life.

Considering El Dorado schools are on the lower tiers of the state ranking system I would say El Dorado is definitely not a place I would want to raise kids.

But El Dorado is actually not "on the lower tiers of the state ranking system," whatever make believe system you are referring to.

I don't know why people want to move down here. It really no jobs down here all the good jobs that making good money are gone! Only thing this town it's got is nursing homes, taking care the elders in their home, and fast food places making a minimum wage!

My post "was really true." Apparently, you are selling yourself short with the activities that you're involved in, if you actually feel "jobs are few and crime is high." This is just a complete fabrication. Large corporations across the country are cutting employees. Though Great Lakes is experiencing layoffs, Murphy Oil and USA, Deltin, Deltic, Amercable, and El Dorado Chemical are all hiring. And crime is as low as its been here in over 2 decades. Look it up. The City Council just passed the enforcement of an ordinance to fine people who do not properly secure their trash for pickup, and our town just certified a new Keep El Dorado Beautiful Committee, that was approved by Governor Beebe. New roads have been paved, smart declines have been made to rogue business owners, we have new downtown improvements that have been attracting businesses downtown, retail companies moving in, and industrial jobs bringing in high volume jobs. It does seem unethical that our city and county are in the real estate business, imminent domain properties to build public facilities, and use outsourced contractors to save pennies on the dollar than do business locally, but this is a real epidemic facing all parts of the nation. We just can't afford to do that here, as our current businesses that are already here are being alienated by our local government. Other than this flaw, El Dorado is a great place to live.
Msyogibear, read this post again;

There ARE jobs here. Everyone of these employers pay $40,000 or more a year. Some, more than $75,000. I doubt your pulling that, sweet cheeks. Now, if only YOU are qualified for wiping old people's asses or flipping burgers, that's not the towns fault. YOU should've applied yourself more through school and not piss your life away with your bullshit activities. Or, you can open a business. But I'd hate to push an unmotivated person too much.

As you are now above a CNA, maybe they are suggesting you aim at getting an RN, or a certification as some sort of blood, urine or feces tech. Developing a relationship with an elderly owner of a nursing home might open an opportunity to someday have your own business.

When I was LPN in little rock we was making twice more than down here. Every since we move down my husband, with a college degree, couldn't find a job in el dorado. Anytime looking job in classified how job out there is nursing homes and fast food place. Now he decided to move somewhere elsewhere to find a job. So whoever looking for a good paying job u need to move out of el dorado to find a better opportunity because down herenot it

Again, read all the employers hiring above, dumbass. Plenty of jobs in El Dorado pay that amount. If you were an LPN, you would be such a dipshit.

Read the above post, dipshit. These are quality careers and are no where close to minimum wage. A dumbass like you might best move put of El Dorado. This town kicksass. There's a few shittyass people that people are waiting to get gone. Go be miserable somewhere else.

It's not my fault she can't have kids. You shouldmt be making fun of someone because they can't. An asshole like you is the reason she lies and says she hates them. You should be ashamed of yourself!

There are plenty of opportunities in El Dorado to socialize. Quit discouraging her because you're miserable.

Agree. That person didn't say anything about hating kids or wanting to be alone. This is the kind of ridiculous crap the Topix stalking psycho says all the time. Oh and if you disagree with anything he says you are "miserable" and need to "get out" of El Dorado. Seriously even if you like it here, like I do, but point something out that suggests El Dorado is less than perfect he will freak out. Whats the most odd is that the psycho accuses others of being miserable when he is the guy that has started not one but two hate campaigns against good people in this town. He's the guy that went on a tear a couple of weeks ago about one woman in particular and stalked an entire family for years. I say people with that much hate in them are the miserable ones. People who dislike El Dorado are a little whiney but don't seem like miserable psychotics to me...

In my opinion El Dorado has serious problems. The same problems that a lot of other small towns in our country are going through though. The difference for any town is how those problems are being handled. That is where I think we are failing. Our town leaders are either in denial that we have problems at all or are focused on retail and festivals. They are economically incompetent to every degree. Its been said plenty of times that a population our size and with our demographics can only support so much retail, and festivals make the town more fun but aren't going to create permanent, year round jobs for anyone except the people in charge of them.

I also can't help but think that there is nothing the officials can do, incompetent or not. Our federal government has positioned itself to punish business, which is exactly why most industry has fled. We have the highest corporate tax rate in the entire world. On top of that are high state taxes and income taxes. And we wonder why the industry leaves? El Dorado used to be an industry town. When industry started fleeing America it naturally left this town too. El Dorado is a perfect example of an industrial-flight area. So many of our officials have given up on business and chose to go the "festival town" route in an act of great desperation. Other than a couple of shiny new buildings, these people have given the town nothing. And they shouldn't exactly be expected too. They are doing all they know how to do.

The only thing that might bring industry back in would be to work with the businessmen that want to open up shop. We just missed an opportunity with a boating company, something that was highly publicized and scrutinized as a major failure, something representative of how out of touch with reality many of our officials can be. Something else would be to drastically reduce land tax and any other taxes that will affect business but that will never happen. After all, we've gotta make those evil businessmen pay their fair share!

My family is looking for a place to relocate. The drug problems in our town are out of control and we want away from it. I know drugs are everywhere but I'm just curious what kind of town El Dorado is. Even the surrounding communities. I looked the town website up and it looks like a beautiful place. But I'm sure any town can be "churched" up with the right pictures. I would like any information and advice on the town. Thank you.
There are worse places but I would never choose to be here if I had other options. I'm stuck here because of family. Anyone who isn't should be gone.
