They are still handing out those free phones? Geesh. Since when is a cell phone a need and not a luxury? My cell bill is $100 a month. If they are going to hand out cell phones, make then "soft" usage, like just to dial 911 in an emergency.

What about flat screen TV’s capable of 3D with a diagonal measurement of at least 40″? Are people consiged to watching an old CRT? Tax more, take more, increase the size of government, and get those HDTV’s out there! And don’t forget the free cable with HDTV! And don't forget a laptop and an iPad with free wifi.

Duck lover,

Not that I agree with the program but it was started under the Reagan administration (with land lines at the time) so the poor could have home phones for safety and to be able to look for jobs. They switched to cell phones several years ago because it was cheaper than land lines.

Look at your cell or home phone bill and you will find a tax that is there specifically to pay for the program.

Even before Reagan, a class of service was offered at a LOWER rate, not FREE, by the phone company. Actually it was during the Nixon administration. It was called "subsidized" not FREE.

The cell phones are FREE and given to anyone who wants them. There have been people that have gone out to see how easy it was to get these cell phones, and even though they could afford them they were accepted into the program. I have no problem with helping people who actually need it, but I'm tired of my tax dollars going to lazy, deadbeat couch potatoes. The founding fathers must be flipping in their graves seeing the US slowly moving toward a completely Socialist society.

I was sent one in the mail. I never requested one And I don't qualify. That just showed me they are just randomly mailing them. I figure whoever is contracted by the government to provide the service is getting paid no matter what, so they don't care if you qualify or not.

It is still technically discounted. What they GIVE you is the phone and some number of minutes/month. After that you have to pay for it.

As far as it being too easy to get that is likely the provider that is forging documentation or simply checking a box on a form they send in that shouldn't be checked. The FCC who runs the program doesn't have a huge investigatory branch to police it. Here are the qualifications. You have to be on one or more of these...

Medicaid;
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Food Stamps or SNAP);
Supplemental Security Income (SSI);
Federal Public House Assistance (Section 8);
Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP);
Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF);
National School Lunch Program's Free Lunch Program;
Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance;
Tribally-Administered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TTANF);
Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR);
Head Start (if income eligibility criteria are met); or
State assistance programs (if applicable).

Federal rules prohibit eligible low-income consumers from receiving more than one Lifeline discount per household. An eligible consumer may receive a discount on either a wireline or wireless service, but not both. A consumer whose household currently is receiving more than one Lifeline service must select a single Lifeline provider and contact the other provider to de-enroll from their program. Consumers violating this rule may also be subject to criminal and/or civil penalties.

They can't oversee all these programs because the government is just too BIG. The food stamp program has the same problems. Food stamps are being used in strip clubs and to buy alcohol and tobacco products. There are people participating in these programs that do not belong there and nothing is being done to prevent the abuse of these "free" items that should only be offered to the folks that need them. There will always be issues with welfare, food stamps and other social programs, but this is just blatant and in your face fraud.

Your list of qualifications might work in a perfect world, but this isn't utopia. I'm also tired of paying for abortions that are being used in lieu of birth control. Planned Parenthood is nothing but a baby killing organization. And I'm actually pro-choice, but this outfit will perform abortions on young girls that have been raped by older men without parental consent. Disgusting.

The Clinton Crime Family would not allow Chelsea to have her ears pierced until she was sixteen but believed she should have access to abortions without their knowledge.
