I hadn't read that article, but had read about this somewhere else. Would never have thought to post it though, so kudos; I'm impressed. And, of course, amused.:)

Has any body ever read any of the Sackett novels by LUIS LAMOR? The stories sound like thier based on Melungeon history or what thier is of it.And in novels the Sackett family is from the Clinch Mountains. Just some usless speculation

I've read other books by Louis L'Amour who wrote mostly westerns. Don't remember this series or if I read it; will look it up. Along with Zane Grey, Louis L'Amour was the king of westerns though.:)

Found them!! Will read. Thanks.:)I think the University of Virginia recently did a comprehensive study on the Melungeons too.

Thanks for posting the link. I read the article and think the journalist did not do a thorough review of the literature. DNA testing has been done that he did not mention. National Geographic had an article a few years back linking men from Lebanon to the Melungeons.

I have read all the Sackett novels and they do not mention Melungeons. To The Far Blue Mountains, the first one, I believe, tells of Barnabas Sackett who arrived in this country from England, if memory serves? No mention. There was a feud and Tell had already left Tennessee. Orin and the youngest with the hottest temper, Tyrel left after one of the feuding family killed Orin's bride and Tyrel killed them. It does mention Clinch mountain. The Daughter of the Legend by Jesse Stuart (who went to LMU, by the way) deals with Melungeons.

The Melungeons were remnants off a 1500's Portugese ships crew left in what would then be South Carolina. AND yes, the Moors (hailing from Turkey, Allah Bless them) were dreaded MUSLIMS! Most converted to Catholicism, some did not. I can't believe this. I did not read this article, nor do I plan to do so. Sounds like a nut.

This is the first reference in all my days that I have heard of Lincoln being associated with Melungeons.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the Muslim invasion in the 600's was stopped by the Emperor Constantine and that this led to the beautiful Spainish architecture of the Moorish style: Alahambra, etc. I think they had to be tough individuals to live and exist in the America's with only the Native American's, Spanish Conquistadors, finally the English in 1607 coming in and still managing to keep their ways and customs. That is just a wonder to me.

I love the Sackett novels and Louis L'Amour's other books as well. If I am wrong (it has been many a year since I read the series)forgive me. My favorite Sackett was always Tell. Just liked his character. One thing I never forgot. Orin had a penchant for picking the 'wrong' kind of woman. Ones with 'narrow' eyes. His pap told him that a narrow eyed woman was as mean as a narrow eyed horse and to leave them alone! LOL!

Wow. Very interesting. My mother was born in Jonesville, Va. She was part melungeon, and died of a rare disease called myleo lympho proliferative disorder. Her doctor told her that this ailment usually only befell people of middle eastern descent. Perhaps another piece of the puzzle has been found.

I don't think the author is a cracker. Not with the name Shadab Siddiqi. His picture was in the print version which is where I read the article.

And Shadow, the speculation that Nancy Hanks was part Melungeon is not new.

I don't doubt that blacks and Indians are part of our Melungeon DNA, but it does seem that Middle Easterners are part of the soup too. I think scientists have simply discovered a new ingredient.

You should read my post from last night. If Melungeons are from the Middle East it would explain the strange disease that killed my mother.

This is ignorance pure and simple, Goober. DNA does not lie and you need to quit growing a beard. You make no sense whatsoever. Actually, the real Goober had a lot more sense.

What is now Sneedville was HAWKINS COUNTY until Hancock County was formed from HAWKINS COUNTY on that side and to the west, CLAIBORNE COUNTY. This happened in 1844. Up until then, Greasey Rock, or "Sneedville" was located in HAWKINS COUNTY.

What is a 'cracker'?

Very interesting reading in which I have never seen. Interesting indeed. I shall have to research some of the ancestry of Nancy Hanks and her tribal connections. It amused me that someone asked on the site I read "Where is the Levant?" I couldn't believe someone would not know that region in the Middle East. The Jefferson connection has been kicked around some. I need to study that more also. DNA is fascinating to me. I like something that is black or white with no gray and that you can search until you root out the existence of any additions to the mix. I love studying Lincoln. He was a fascinating man who lived during a most fascinating time.
