please look for a blog post in the near future ,concerning the effing HAM police dept. and the k-9 dog.
We are used to be stopped for ridiculous reasons while traveling North. Why ? Well because we have Texas plates on our cars. But I have never been so humiliated and disrespected as by the effing HAM
police dept. That effingdog tore our car apart and wasn't interested in anything but the fried chicken in the cooler. the cop who brought him was ridiculously stupid and doesn't know dogs from his butt. my advise..Stay away from that place.. worse that any scene from the movie.."DELIVERANCE" , i PROMISE YOU.

Not everyone. There are unsuspecting outsiders. But you should know better than to exit once you see that big cross stabbing into the clouds. It ain't no stairway to heaven, brother. They light it up on Wednesdays and Sundays, I hear. Just kiddin, although the town can be rough on folks of color.

The Klan statement regarding Effingham is highly offensive. In fact, if you knew anything about Effingham history, you would know that a Fr. Nell from St. Anthony Church single-handedly stopped the Klan in their tracks.

The Klan was being formed throughout Southern Illinois. The presented themselves as a civic organization, and were gaining strength through the region. And then they hit Effingham......and Fr. Nell.

Fr. Nell attended every Klan rally in the region. When the time came at the rally for questions, Fr. Nell would mount the stage and provide information and tough questions to the Klan organizers. Because of him and the people of Effingham - the Klan never was able to get a foothold in the region.

Decades later, in the 1950's, Effingham was considered a "safe community" by blacks traveling from the south. The knew they could stop in Paducah, KY for gas. It was only when the reached Effingham that they could find another safe haven for purchasing gas and supplies.

Your statement, "Neil and Bob" is an affront to the efforts of Fr. Nell and his supporters. Shame on you.

How many years ago was this?

I ask because I owned a business far off the interstate but well within Effingham, and to make long story short, a black gentleman walked in, cold and thirsty and having been shagged out of every place he tried to warm himself at along the way. It was Easter time, and we phoned dozens of Effingham churches for help. When I talked to them, they were willing to help, but when this fellow got on the line, it was no room at the inn. Finally, a church from way over in Montrose sent people to pick him up. Somehow, this doesn't sound like the same place you describe, which is why I ask for the time period where blacks were welcomed with open arms. There sure wasn't any "father figures" around when this stranger came through looking for so little.

I wonder why the owner of that business, you described, didn't give more help than just the use of the phone?

The owner was me and I gave him shelter, phone, food, hot coffee, all while another non-employee assisted me in trying to run my counter at the same time. This went on for about two hours. We did not give up on the man, and helped out as best we could until the one church made it into town to pick him up. They were great, giving him food and an overnight or two at a local motel or whatever they had set up. They were the real heroes, the church from out of town. A church in Montrose, if memory serves. I'm sure if we would kept calling down the list, we would've found somebody local, but it was disheartening to have to go on as long as we did before we got the out of town response.

Why is it when someone helps a person another person has to downgrade what that person did. Seems to me the owner did all he could for a person in need of help and you(Moved to Effingham) have to say something that was really not necessary. What would you have done? After all the owner did what he could and besides that the churches of Effingham did not help this man, he had to go to the church of Montrose. It's pretty sad when the churches of this town can't help someone in need.

I witnessed, what I think was a very stupid move both on the part of Effingham City and Effingham County law enforcement officers a few weeks ago.

I was going to go out to eat, and so we turned onto Ave of Mid America west going towards Steak and Shake off the highway, decided to change my mind and go to Denny's, so I turned around in the Steak N Shake parking lot, while doing so, a truck was at a Green East - West light and RED north South, Effingham County Deputy ran the light, no SIRENS at all, just lights! Talk about lawsuit possibilities if they had hit that vehicle! I know it was late and hardley any cars were out but OUCH!

So next I get up to the stoplight that had changed to red for East West and Green for North south then was in another cycle, just changing to Green as I came up to it, and then here comes another car, Effingham Police same deal, only lights no sirens, I even had my windows down listening, and it was a good thing I had stopped complaining about them running the first stoplight to pay attention to my driving or I could have been hit.

I would have guessed the speed of both to be in excess of 40-45, no way to slow down to avoid an accident. I have talked to other police officers who say, that is a major liability, so if you do live in Effingham, might get ready for a lawsuit some day, cause it will happen.

This happens every time donuts go on sale across town.

But all kidding aside, your complaint is a good posting to those who would dare venture of of I-57 and/or I-70.

Doesn't make much sense to rush to help someone (assumed) at one scene if you're going to kill someone on the way, does it?

I also blog about how to protect yourself from authoritative misconduct, but I never thought I might have to consider including defensive driving tips.

Thanks for the heads-up on behalf of all drivers risking a stop-off in Effingham, Illinois.

You guys are stupid as F*ck. The police will stop you if you are doing something wrong. If your license plate light is out and they have nothing better to do, prepare to get pulled over. I'm happy about it. I'm not doing anything wrong and the most I've ever got is a written warning.

To the guy that was crying about the police running through lights at 45. It gets worste around hear try dealing the county out in the county doing over 100. They are nuts.

I have lived here all my life.Seen blacks come and go.Have good friends who are black. And yes, they are treated like shit here in Effingham. But the f*cking mexicans are treated with open arms. The whole town is little mexico now and they all need ran off.Not prejudice, but 90% of the crime is committed by them and the cops are too worried harrassing someone for a dog off the leash,or having a few too many toys in your yard.Instead they should be clearing out the meth heads, and the illegals in this town that are stealing our vehicles, mugging on the streets(which was unheard of in our little town years back),harrassing our women and attacking them on the streets. They live at our local charities, and buy up all our items from local catholic charities store to send back to mexico. They leave little for our hard working citizens in need that are born and raised here legally and working their asses off trying to take care of their families. In my book, all blacks are welcome, get rid of the south of the border trash!!!!!The police do not abide by the law here either or enforce it where it needs to be.You can murder in this town and get probation and a slap on the wrist and that is no joke!!Just write the widow a letter of apology every year to remind her of what you did to her spouse and you can go free.

I lived in Effingham, the worse place in the world to raise a family too by the way. The police there are absolutely aweful. I feel sorry for the couple who had to endure what they did, and the poor gentleman that got no help. None of this surprises me though. That is Effingham today and NOT a place to be proud to call home. Thats why I moved, the best move I ever made. I'm just sorry my granddaughter is still stuck there.
