While I "get" what Ms. Goodman says -- and I am a usual fan of her column -- what is so "Edwardian" about kids building tree houses, doing magic tricks, and being nice/polite to girls? These were the things I was taught as a kid during the Johnson, Nixon, and Ford administrations. And, while I'm something of a modified pacifist, the tales of brave battles or explorers left in the Arctic snow were super.

The flaw of Ms. Goodman's column, in my opinion, is that she didn't define the ultimate goal of a boy/man. Is it to be the stupid, boring behavior of so many sit-com dads (no "boy" crisis?) or that of someone who actually aspires to DO something?
