Yes, Finally the school board has come to the public in the news paper and told us that they have to raise our property taxes in order to compensate for the ones that don't pay any taxes. Well it want be long that the ones that do pay taxes will not be able to afford this. I guess the school board needs to figure out a way to stop raising taxes instead of raising them. So if you see a school board member on the street just give them a big thank you. Maybe the school board has learned that taxing the rich doesn't work and it is the middle class that does pay the taxes.

The board raised taxes but it was following the state suggested tax rate. Just like you want a raise each year to keep up with inflation, so does the school system.

That is a suggested rate. Go to your boss and suggest a raise and see how that works out for you. These people on the board have a choice. They can stick it to the taxpayer or find ways to save money. Funny last I checked no one is giving the taxpayers a cost of living adjustment. Just remember to thank all the board members that raised your taxes. I mean they don't a problem with you paying more for them to waste. One day will will get a board that can come to realize that the taxpayer is about broke.

I wonder- what happens when no one can afford to pay taxes? Then what? Or what if we all just stopped paying them- who would foot the bill then? And drained taxpayer- you are right- the state SUGGESTED they be raised. Guess we did not get a chance to SUGGEST that they NOT be raised. I SUGGEST we remember this next time a school board election comes up.

Funny things are that these board members are our friends and family. We work with them and we see them at town. Yet our friends have no problem on steam rolling us in more taxes. They look at us like sheep for the slaughter in the endeavor to keep the school system drunk on spending. It is time to let our friends we need a change. We need members that understand what it is like to really have to earn your money and how hard you work for it. They don't understand that. They just understand MORE,MORE and MORE.

Yes, I'm drained too but since Metcalfe is about 75% free lunch, that means a majority of the parents of school kids probably pay little or no property taxes. That leaves the parents of the 25% and many of those with no kids in school to pay the bulk. So what do we do? Move to a richer county or shut up and pay. I'd like to see someone come up with a way to get all the welfare parents to get jobs and maybe they could own some property and pay taxes.

The state is cutting funding to school districts all across the state. Metcalfe County is no exception. The money has to come from somewhere. That is unless you would prefer for this district to shut down. Im sure"drained taxpayer" that you would truly feel drained driving your children to Barren, Monroe, or Glasgow schools. Possibly paying an out of area tuition fee. Or just send them to private school and pay a fee there. I have no kids and yet i still have to pay a school tax. Do I complain? No, I understand that this is a neccesity. I want this area to prosper and for my future children to get an education that will prepare them for college or for the real world. For that reason I understand the need to pay for a service I do not yet benefit from.

Thanks, Edmonton. It's so refreshing to see someone post on Topix that says something sensible and that can write an entire paragraph with no misspelled words and complete sentences. I would never complain about school taxes. That's our hope for the future. I do get sick about paying taxes for able-bodied people to not work and draw a check each month. I'm amazed at those couples (not always married) who, one or both, get disabilty checks but have no problem having babies. The man often works more physical jobs than I could ever do, but, of course, he gets paid cash. Come on, drained taxpayer, complain about this instead of school taxes.

These taxes the school board raises now are the ones our children will pay in the future times ten. Our kids will never know what it is like to own property because taxes will be so high all they will be able to do is rent. The school board has a duty of protecting our children's future. Since their taxes hikes affect property taxes immediately they are on the hook. Will you be thanking them and patting them on the back when your child receives his property tax in the mail. Yes we need schools to teach kids. Not fancy sound systems or new football fields to rent. When it comes to tightening the belt the school system remains oblivious to saving instead of spending. Inflation is created by a school board that knows no end to making hard working people pay more. Chaining and strangling our children's future in more taxes. The school system has a budget surplus of money and rather tax you more than spend what they have been storing up. As for education. Yes the kids deserve a good one and that is not coming from here being ranked lowest in the state. I guess some folks like to be taxed more for now educational improvement. Time to remove this school board and add one with the common sense to save money and not tax families.

I am far from perfect and make mistakes. I also understand that the political types are selfish. They care nothing for the consequences they are creating for the future of our children. Our board raises taxes like it is no big deal. Well it is a big deal. You never see the school board lower taxes. All you see is a hunger that will never be stopped until responsible people take over and instead of raising taxes they should be figuring out to cut spending. Remember this if you should remembering anything at all. The taxes the school board raises today and from now on will be the taxes your kids will pay. It is time to stop tax increases.

Drained taxpayer, as far as I know all the school board members own property, so they pay taxes on these properties. They have children who will pay taxes. You talk as if the school board is some far-away government body that could never feel any effect of their decisions. You use the words "our children." It's them and their children, too. Wouldn't they want what's best for themselves and their children? Why don't you run for school board member and then you could see what's needed?
By the way I am not a school board member or even know any board members personally. I just can't believe that most school board members are "political" or "selfish."

Maybe not selfish but ignorant to the fact they are levying more taxes on property even to their own children's disadvantage. Yes the board members are not doing what they should be doing and that is making sure the kids are educated and the taxpayers are getting their money's worth. At the rate the school board taxes the next twenty years when kids get out of school and they raise taxes every year like they have done in the past. Their are putting the taxes higher than some property is worth. I don't know a soul on the school board either and you are correct. They are taxing their own children into oblivion also. That is why you can't have the mentality like the article in the paper saying we have to pay more for the ones that don't. Let me tell you know. There are becoming more and more that don't. So maybe in the future they will consider not taxing and start tightening the belt in order to protect our children from crushing taxes.

By the way. The school board is it's own government. It has taxing authority. It needs no consent other than the board members. You folks like paying higher taxes and not considering the future of the children that may want to grow up here and can't because of outrageous taxation of the school board and the county and library. Go ahead. Our we could as a county say stop taxing us and start living in your means. Make the cuts that keep you from coming back to us for more and more. You already see be the school boards own admission that there are less and less of us paying taxes.

Hey Betcha- betcha wrong on your assumption! Drained taxpayer voices MANY of our thoughts- and we do not live in govt housing, receive foodstamps, etc. Is wrong to make that type of assumption simply because you may disagree with one person voicing their opinion. Taxing people is not how you get ahead- try cutting back and living within your means. Novel thought, huh?

When the other side has nothing left to defend their buddies raising taxes on the working people of this county and think we are not going to speak up. Resorts to name calling and destruction of character. Well then you won the debate. They have nothing left to contribute. Mine is to only wake the people up of metcalfe county that want to hold on to what they have worked so hard for only to have the school board whittle away at their property tax after tax. Keep taxing us and we will all be on govt assistance and not pay any tax. I guess then we will have our county divided up into other counties.

I can see that one cannot reason with drained taxpayer. If as you say, some people have higher property taxes than their property is worth, they need to go see the PVA. Anyone can go in and question the value they have assessed, and I know personally that they have changed a few. Also, I have asked you to comment about the ones who draw welfare and refuse to work and you ignore that. Perhaps, you are on welfare.
