Petters attorney decries 'rush to judgment'

News reports, even when they try to report an unbiased, full story, they never quite succeed- they are more interested in writing a gripping story that will sell. You know nothing about his character. I happen to know, personally, very much unlike you that Tom has always been a wonderful family member, and is to this very day. The love in his heart he has for his family members, close friends, and for humanity for that matter, is exceptional and in all honesty, unlike anyone I've ever known. After what the media has done to him, no one is wiling to see him in any other lights but an ugly ones. The economy crashed, they thought they got their guy, an excellent scape goat, everyone was outraged, and they settled for that. No one wanted to question or investigate what actually went down, because everyone was so happy to have someone to blame, especially considering the state of our economy at that time! What makes you think you know anything about who he is as a family man? No news article will ever be able to depict that part of him- whether they are trying to make him look good or bad- that is simply something you cannot comment on unless you actually know first hand and it is clear that you do not! I know that no family member of his, has anything remotely bad to say of his character, soul, or morals.

His familiness and kindness is not what is at issue. He's a crook in the company of crooks and no matter how nice he is, he stole a shat load of money from people. That's what this is all about. Of course, his family won't question openly or publicly his character, soul or morals because he gave them a lot of money but if they don't step back and take a true look at the sociopathic thief that he is, then they have a huge problem themselves.

I am sure you know Tom Petters better than any one else on this forum. And God Bless you for staying at his side through all this. But for the sake of Tom, it doesn't look good. You, and the family should all get together and tell Tom, that his only salvation from this is to start talking. It is obvious to many that the people who should be tried, are not going to help Tom. They are going to make sure Tom takes the wrap. I'm not talking about the people who already pleaded guilty. We have many, who Tom is depending on to help him out of this and they will not be doing that. It has come down to "each for their own". Tell Tom to talk. People will listen.

Here's an update for the idiots who can't follow along:
Things do not seem to be going very well for accused hedge fund fraudster Thomas Petters.
The Minnesota businessman and hedge fund manager, who is accused of running a $3.5 billion Ponzi scheme, has suffered through several days of damaging testimony at his fraud trial in St. Paul, Minn. Worse yet, his lawyers argue, the judge has barred them from adequately presenting their case.
On Monday, Paul Engh, Petters’ lawyer, demanded a retrial after U.S. District Judge Richard Kyle repeatedly upheld prosecutors’ objections to Engh’s cross-examination of Larry Reynolds, who under direct examination had described in detail Petters’ alleged fraud.
“He lied to the jury about his crimes,” Engh claimed of the man he called his most important witness.“The jury has to hear the truth.”
One thing they won’t be hearing is the judge declaring a mistrial. Kyle immediately denied Engh’s motion.
What they did hear was Reynolds’ testimony on all the fraud he and Petters allegedly engaged in. The convicted felon and witness protection program member said he and Petters began conspiring together more than 10 years ago. Reynolds, who has already pleaded guilty to money-laundering in the case, said he helped lie to auditors and Petters’ investors, drawing up phony documents for the alleged Ponzi scheme and helping Petters launder money.
Last week, the prosecution’s star witness testified: Deanna Coleman, the former vice president of operations at Petters, who agreed to wear a wire after admitting the scheme to authorities last year. In one taped conversation with Petters CFO Bob White, Coleman said that “Tom knows” the purchase orders alleged used in the Ponzi scheme were fake,“he just doesn’t want [to] think about it.”
The jury has also heard from Petters’ top accountant, James Wehmhoff, who called the company’s books a mess, and from a hedge fund manager at Interlachen Capital Management, which claims it lost $60 million in the scam.
