The lack of awareness and sympathy for life threatening allergies floors me. Everyone of those parents protesting would indeed want those peanut free provisions in place if it were their child. I have life threatening allergies to fish, shellfish and smoke. I work at an elementary school. The school has been so amazing and suppotive of me. None of the staff brings any fish product into the school, guest techers are not allowed to have fish, the kitchen does not serve it and my kindergardeners don't bring it either. The lunch aides watch what the kids eat and let me know when not to go to the cafeteria or which classrooms to avoid. If someone is burning outside the school, the staff makes sure I know and get out safely. They have done this for 4 years without any complaints. We would prefer not to have these allergies, but we also want to live our lives.
This child and her family just want her to have an education, friends and school experiences equal to the other students at the school. I think leaving the peanut products at home would be the grown-up, unselfish, kind thing to do!!
