Full story: TwinCities.com

Hardrive Inc.'s "screed man" Mike Lasker, left, measures the asphalt thickness during an asphalt pour, while Craig Becker evens the spread in the background Friday on U.S. 12 near Orono.

Asphalt shortage, roadwork? People, it's getting late in the day. Certain societies have been using trains for awhile now. We, as a nation, if we want a more competetive future, is going to have to find modes of transportation other than cars. Unless there is a safe, eco friendly car of the future which we don't have currently, are going to have to create some gravel shortages for the rail laying worker.

The Democrat's no energy policy is doing wonders for the economy. We're sure green though. Isn't it great?

I'm not one to support Democrats but I will point out that Republicans had total control in the years leading up to the current financial situation. They allowed the mortgage crisis to happen, they allowed tax breaks of absurd proportions for people buying gas guzzlers -- well in excess of what they gave for hybrid vehicles and they brought us into a war that didn't need to be started at a cost that's skyrocketing. Given these facts you might want to save a little venom for the other side of the aisle.

Not to worry folks, since trains and buses are taboo we'll just use up all the oil left in our cars and on 10 lane wide highways and go back to living in caves in 200 years.

I'm confident "green roads" will be the next concept coming down the horn. Maybe they should try hemp?

THIS is why we needed a gas tax increase, folks. Get it now? There is a high cost to continuing our freeway culture.

In fact, the gas tax increase should have been at least ten cents, but the loonies wouldn't have it.

I think you meant "who's"?

I'm getting so sick of all this .. to me it's nothing more than gouging. "Shortage" my rear ... just an excuse to raise the price on everything ... it's a slippery slope that businesses are all following each other down.

Maybe we can figure out a way to make roads out of something that is readily available. I don't know, maybe there's a way to make them out of dirt or something.

Building roads will become so expensive that we can't maintain them:

According to energy investment banker Matthew Simmons, global oil production is now declining, from 85 million barrels per day to 60 million barrels per day by 2015. During the same time demand will increase 14%.

This is like a 45% drop in 7 years. No one can reverse this trend, nor can we conserve our way out of this catastrophe. Because the demand for oil is so high, it will always be higher than production; thus the depletion rate will continue until all recoverable oil is extracted.

Alternatives will not even begin to fill the gap. And most alternatives yield electric power, but we need liquid fuels for tractors/combines, 18 wheel trucks, trains, ships, and mining equipment.

We are facing the collapse of the highways that depend on diesel trucks for maintenance of bridges, cleaning culverts to avoid road washouts, snow plowing, roadbed and surface repair. When the highways fail, so will the power grid, as highways carry the parts, transformers, steel for pylons, and high tension cables, all from far away. With the highways out, there will be no food coming in from "outside," and without the power grid virtually nothing works, including home heating, pumping of gasoline and diesel, airports, communications, and automated systems.

This is documented in a free 48 page report that can be downloaded, website posted, distributed, and emailed: http://www.peakoilassociates.com/POAnalysis.h...

I used to live in NH, but moved to a safer place. Anyone interested in relocating to a nice, pretty, sustainable area, good climate with much rain and good soil?

My post was responding to the guy claiming emails, faxes and calls were being watched by the government. If that was you, then you are a moron, but I don't think I called you one in the original post.
