My knowledge of Ecorse starts back in 1969, I remember Burger King being built when I first moved to that area. Sorry about the double name above, but my post in the DPW thread seemed to need a different name. My Mother and My Brother and my only Sister deal with that hole everyday.

Burger Kind was always the perfect ride while on my mini bike using the ID then Ironton to the field. Great times I will always remember.

With the hot weather lately as a reminder; does anyone remember the 'street showers' when the fire department would turn on the hydrants for us kids to run through. I remember them mostly at the recreation sites. Speaking of Recreation; that was really awesome. We had ping pong tournaments, knock hockey, box hockey, making lanyards (square, round, hybrids. I especially loved the Recreation road trips to Tiger Stadium, the Zoo, and Brennan Pools. Summers were especially awesome.

I had some red ones, my dad had me take the battery out of the car he had and the acid ate my shoes up by the next morning, I had one shoe and would not throw it out for a long time. What was they, 12 bucks back then. Now they are at the dollar stores..lol
The Red Shoe stories are funny even the stolen shoe story! It is hysterical the things as kids that we hung onto for dear life that today we would not even consider.

Why oh why did you have to mention Tiger Stadium lol I still watch every game on the net and remember all to well catching a bus as a child to go to saturday games downtown. I would not even tell my parents. I would just say I would be home later and take off to the ballfield. I got caught because I had a sunburn on just one side of my face and arms on a sunny day. Those was the good days for sure. This is a great thread!

I definitely remember the rec programs, I worked a few summers at one of the playgrounds. To this day I can kick butt in ping pong because of those days! I especially remember the road trip to Tiger Stadium where my "assistant" (who was busy fighting with someone) and I lost 11 kids by the time we walked them a mile to the bus. Today I would be jailed! Fun times though, really fun times!

That is hysterical! We always loved our monitors, plus it gave them (you) a summer job - which as it should be. What a gas!

It is funny you say that because I do not remember permission sheets at that time (maybe they existed but I don't remember them). Do you remember singing 25 bottles of beer on the wall on while on the bus to the game? I remember we used to bang the wooden seats for big plays and yell at the outfielders like Rocky Colavito. Still love the hotdogs to this day. Won't eat anything else at the park but hotdogs...funny!

I remember how wonderful that was! And walking home down High Street exhausted from skating fast and furious for hours at the outdoor rink, walking alone and feeling safe,(imagine that!) silent except for the occassional car and snow crunching under very cold feet!

Who remembers when Jerry Lewis was so drunk on the stage at Ecorse Days he almost fell off, then was escorted off by police? I was there but did not see it as I was watching the speed boat races. Those was some awsome races around the island. I still have a advertisment that my parents sent me in the late 80's or very early 90's annoucing a bowling alley to be built on it. Those was some good times that I will never forget.

It was about the mid 70's. The stage was put up near the Ecorse Rowing Club.

Ecorse football team is 3-0 and ranked #3 in division 6. Can anyone remember a higher ranking? I think we were ranked 7 in class B back in 1964.

"66" undefeated & ranked #2 in state, behind I believe, Buchanan. Who I'm certain we could have beaten head-to-head. With 3 All State players!

Yes, he may have even been on the 1966 team that the guy above talked about. Dave Purifoy was on the '66 team too. Not sure who the other all state guy(s) are.

Dave was either a freshman or sophmore then. The A.S. were Gerald Childres, Andy Williams & Bob Heller. All 3 had major college offers. Lenny Weems & James Cooper also were on that team & were high picks in the major league baseball draft. I believe they were both #1 picks. I'm sure Cooper was. The hockey team lost a 3 game series to Detroit Cathedral for the state championship. The basketball team defeated Pershing a class A school which included Spencer Haywood & Simpson (can't recall his first name)on their roster. Some pretty good athletes from the Coast before & after "66".

Such great memories! I had forgotten about the opening of the fire hydrants...what fun! Recreation was the best...always something fun to do. The ball game trips were great, to then, Briggs Stadium. We also got to go to the Detroit Zoo. I remember when the ice rink opened. My first time on the ice, on borrowed skates, I had to crawl off. We would get so cold, or toes would be numb walking home! But, who cared! Ecorse was a great place to grow up!
