I was terminated for conduct issues, you name it, I was written up for it. I was on PIPs the day that _____ walked in the door. What was the answer to the unemployment appeal? deny everything?

As A store manager of DG myself i find it degrading to hear other managers degrade the very company that believes enough in us to provide us an opportunity to better ourselves. i have been with the company almost three years and although i know its stressfull and time consuming its a fine job and i personally feel that its not the companies fault other managers haven't mastered the skill of delegating their responsibilities. If managed correctly, their payed well for the amount of work they do. its all about enjoying what you do and teamwork.
It is all about delegating, time mgt, however as you should know the talent to pass on those skills can be difficult at best, and should be up to the DM to assist us in locating those individuals. That could be the issue at hand leading to the post.

well as i wrote before, these things need to be told to the whole united states in the media. we can write on here all we want but only a few others from dollar general workers only will read this page. put your story out there for the world to see. thats the only way we can change things. dollar general does not care what we write on here but they do care what he media has to say. you can make a difference if you would just tell your story. no story is too little or too big to be told. you dont have to give your name or anything just email your story. please i am asking you to take a stand, if not for you, then the children of our future who may have to work for this company. email me at tednjane@embarqmail.com. freedom of speech is our right and we should use it to change what needs to be changed. thanks jane

not a happy camper,
the best way to get around the 50/50/50/, is to make sure when you do help your cashier, take large baskets. or high priced merchandise. Ring up a few phone cards. If you take large baskets it will increase your sales. My cashiers used to get really mad at me for doing this, but I didn't get written up, and I stayed under the radar. You have control, cashiers are out to get your job, remember that. And don't let to many people know what you are doing or you will be in the same boat.Just keep an eye out, and if you see a large basket, walk up to them and say,"I can take you over here" the cashier will thank you for the help.
And you will not be highlighted.

Well i am an Assistant Manager at Dollar general. And i have to agree with a few of the comments. There is absolutely no way this so called Basket size policy works. I have been written up on several occasions do to low basket size. Its a ridiculous policy. How can my basket be compared to someone who is on register for 7 hrs. Me being a manager backs up the main register so therefore Im not on register much. Im only called if my cashier has a long line or goes on break. Other than that i am on the sales floor completing tasks. Then have to be off the register by 8 so i can be on the sales floor for the last hour. I have even tried staying below the 50 customers hence the 50/50/50 rule. All last week i stayed under 50 customers and was told by my store manager that it still counts. That i am probably sliding and they will be watching me and my night cashier. I was and still am very offended by the mere thought of being referred to as a thief. Dollar general is a horrible company to work for. They expect you to kill yourself for the pennies they throw your way. I am praying i find another job soon .Don't know how much more i can take. I don't mind working hard but i expect to be compensated accordingly. And treated fairly not harassed about something out of my control. I can't make customers purchase something they don't wantjust so my basket size is larger. Many more things should be taken into consideration such as shift worked, length of shift worked and customer count per shift worked.
Not a happy camper,
your solution is to stay under 50 customers, and take at least 2 large baskets per shift. Or high prices items such as phone cards. If you see someone in line with a large basket offer to ring them up at your register. Your cashier will thank you and you will not be the one highlighted. This worked for me the whole time I was employed as an asst. mgr.

Not a happy camper:
My Dm and Rgm had different rules on the 50/50/50 rule.No matter how many customers we had if 50% of them were under the avg. basket we got a write up, and we gave our employees a write up. I argues this fact that it is not the way the policy reads and they would not give. It's just another way they can get rid of a person if they want to. I ever tried to call the 'help center' and was told that the DM and the RGM can decide what they want to do in any store in thier district. It's just another game they like to play.

what seems to have happened is the manager did not wait for corporate to approve you in thier system. the manager put you to work off the clock because without a employee id you cannot clock in or out. this manager violated some serious federal and state laws. and if your background check had come back bad, she would have had to fired you. this is obviously dollar general managers untrained or just didnt give a damn what happens. was she short of help at the time you were hired? did you get on the computer and do any video training or the questionaire you do after you filled out your application. she didnt put you into the computer system correctly. you should call human resources first and find out what happened. then get you a lawyer fast as you can and sue the heck out of them. if you had got hurt on the job, wow, you might have been owning a part of a very evil company. would you like to tell your story to a newspaper reporter. i am working with a major reporter and he is looking for stories just like yours. if you are interested in telling your side email me tednjane@embarqmail.com and i will give you the info. i am working on gettingt the story out about dollar general and how they are allowed to treat employee any way they want. they use their policies and prccedures to benefit only themselves. but in your case, the policies and procedures will help you. use them for your benefit. good luck and email me if you would like to get your side of the story out.

i totally agree with you, i worked for dg for 3 years as assistant manager, i had a great manager but our 3rd key was worthless and liked to cause drama with everyone. we never had enough hours to do all the stuff that corporate wanted and going into christmas was even worse. they are so worried about the employees being thieves, cause its never the customers, and were i am from all the meth heads and welfare bumms are the ones that you have to watch. someone in this corporation needs to get a clue and treat their better. i was let go a few days ago from alligations by our 3rd key because i didnt give her a night off that she wanted when our store manager was taken out on medical leave. all her bs started after she found out that our worthless dm asked me to take the managers assessment test and become the sm...and if you are let go for nonsense getting ahold of adr (alternative dispute resolution) is a joke, they are on dg side not a 3rd party with no connection. how many times have you heard in your cbls and in the handbook that a store have 2 people while closing...well i had to work from 4-10:30pm by myself, the dm told me under certain circumstances you have to...yeah when things are convenient for them and that is what adr said too..then say its a policy if actually its not. so glad to be out of all the nonsense that dollar general is made up of...keep cutting the stores hours they work with maybe next year they can buy another race car.

@xdg. would you like to tell your story to a reporter? email tednjane@embarqmail.com. i will give you the info. you dont have to tell your name. just the facts of working there and what happens. seems like everyone story is the same just different day different time. but you should apply for unemployement you can win cause i did. they think they fire people so they cannot get it but you can use thier policy and procedure against them cause they dont go by those unless it benefits them. i have tried and tried to get a job but no one wants a person like me that has been physically damaged by working in the slave labor trade of dg. it seems like they see dg on your app and dont want the bad habits of dg brought into their workplace. good luck.

I was hired to work part time two days a week,Sunday and Monday. I was only given four hours Sunday then five hours Monday. I was promised more hours but after the second week ,Corty the manager took an hour off my work week and then the next week gave my Monday to another employee. This is not even a part time job work week according to Pennsylvania Labor Laws. Needless to say I asked him why he did this and he said I was not putting out merchandise in proper places. I told him that videos don t give enough advice and he should shadow me to do my job right. I finished my shift and quit. Do not work at WestView Pittsburgh Pa.

Ive worked for the company for 7 years and I always took pride in the company. I worked with 4 dm's and they were great till I got the fourth dm. Who was all about write up and her "try to be, perfet district". I went from sales associate, to asm, to smc, then to sm. My store would make up to 9,000 in sales a day. And my crew and i did our best to keep up with the average 3300 peice truck. During the time i was short staffed my Dm came in and asked me if i could transfer to another store. Becasue she felt this store was TO MUCH for me. I told her NO. because another store manager had previously told me that they were promised my brand new store when it opened. And when i did get it. tables were turning on me. Then when she began her score card. She said it would be better if i transfer or risk getting a PIP if i stayed. I reported her to my RM. and all she did was forward the email back to my Dm. and was i in trouble for reporting her. She threatened me by vising my store and I better have truck and recovery 100% and the RM will be joining her. Well be this. her and the RM were buddy buddys. MY dm having been a SM also and work the same amount of time I was. Except Im young. and who really wants a young SM. I started DG when I was 16. I was there for 7 years till 2012. I quit with my 2 weeks but didnt last my 2 weeks because the pressure she put on me was unbearable. Constant phone calls to my store day and night. Asking my employees if im there and what did i do today. Hello! Im not like others that will leave the place trashed up. As an SMC ive seen how SM's leave there store when they quit. It was a mess and i would go to different districts to clean them up.

Horrible place to work. I'm still there now. But during Christmas week I was suspended for that whole week because my SM said I was a no call no show the Friday before. Which is total bull. I called all Friday morning and no one answered or the phone was busy. I was in the hospital with my fiance and had no other way to get in touch with my SM besides my cell. Well It died and I couldn't call anymore. So I went to work that next Saturday morning and he told me I was taken off the schedule I tried to show him where I called but he wouldn't even look. Maybe if he stayed off the damn phone someone could get through ya know. I've never been written up always come on time. I didn't even get holiday pay because he took me off the schedule and I'm 3rd key. Since I didn't get a check I wasn't able to pay my rent or lights and now I'm facing an eviction notice with a 4 yr old kid and no one to help and still working for this bullsh*t company. I don't even think what he did was legal. It's crazy how they treat us. Like pack mules. Slave labor. Drain us dry and throw you out. Since I've been with this company almost a year my health has gotten so bad and I'm only 21. My hair if falling out in spots. I've had SHINGLES. And still had to work with those which is very painful. I was doped up on all that medicine with a 4 day excuse from my doctor and he still said he "needed" me to work. Even doped up on painkillers I had to be there. It's bullshit. Never work for them. It's a trap

wrong@right and tyler. it happens to take a lot of hard manual labor and a good person with strong work ethics. a person who has a great clean ,customer friendly attitude who can build a good team that supports the manager with the manager giving back the respect she/he has to earn from her associates. a manager who can delegate the work and work right along beside the associates. a manager who will give a pat on the back to those who do a great job and makes the store look good. a manager who has a firm hand and a soft heart. a manager that can be flexible and a example of what he/she wants her associates to be like. a manager who has common sense and uses it. a manager willing to train the associates on all policies and procedures so that they know what to do when a situation comes up and they dont run off customers by looking stupdi because they have not been trained properly. i could go on and on. but this was just to show that it takes more than half a brain to run one of these stores. but in reality when dollar general discovers they have a good manager they find the quickest way to get rid of these people and find someone with half a brain to take thier place. result being, dollar generals reputation in the now. they dont want someone who can do the job right and treat the associates right, thus all the wrongful terminations, hurt workers and policy violation terminations. it seems they need to have employees that steal, a company that does inventory and doesnt count the store right, so they dont have to give out the big bonus and they can use the loss at tax time. they do have too much profit if you look at thier financials page. in other words, you cannot be a good manager who knows what they are doing, if you are, you will be gone before long. they want people that will do others wrong and lie on them from the company ceo on down. termination is one of the ways they use to get rid of other associates when they get fired, they usually do not have anything left to lose, so they go and tell everything that is happening on others for retaliation. hmm that word is a key word for dollar general. you dont see too many district managers here on topix do you. no you see store managers on down being done dirty every day. i just wish the ones who complain on here and you have every right to, would you just please at least tell someone who will use your story to make a difference if not for you for the future employees who may be our kids or our grandkids who may need a job and dg is the only thing they can get. i can get you there to the person if you want to tell your story. it does take a person who has more than half a brain to really run a good store. even a dollar general store, and there are a whole of good people still working in these stores because they have to, there is nothing else where they live. thanks for reading, good luck in your endeavors.

I have been with Dollar General for over 6 years now. I am a store manager and I enjoy my job. It has its days and no the salary is not fantastic but DG offers me job security. My DM is great and truly cares. Hope things pick up for everyone. My point is Dollar General as a whole is not all bad. Dollar General is a chain therefore every district will be ran differently.
