This is an excellent article! Instead of treating all Amish as if they're cut from the same cloth, this goes into some of the differences between the Swatzentrubers and 'normal' Amish.

You can't just go around dumping human waste on fields. Ever since the agricultural revolution thousands of years ago, people have been living too close together for this practice to be safe. Ever hear of Cholera? Entire towns were wiped out in the 1800's from that. In other parts of the world where it's considered ok to dump human waste on fields? They still are!

It's not against the 'normal' Amish people's religion to follow perfectly valid sewage safety laws... it shouldn't be for these guys.

Throw them in jail, then if that doesn't solve the problem, seize their farms. That Ordnung will change real fast.

This is beyond 'religious freedom' this is a basic public safety requirement for living in the first world. Don't get all teary eyed because they're religious nuts.

I agree, this is not about religious freedom, it's about obeying basic public safety laws...

I really respect the Old Order Amish and their way of life, however I don't respect the Swartzentruber Amish, the Old Order Amish don't even like them. The Old Order Amish know that the Bible teaches you must obey the government unless they want you to do things like joining the military or denounce the Amish faith, ect. The Swartzentruber Amish take it to an extreme where they want absolute freedom from the government

ps, the "true" Old Order Amish don't believe in defending themselves or representing themselves in court, these Swartzentruber are violating their own religion just to say that they have religious objections to it?

If the "Swartzentruber Amish" don't want to obey the government's health rules then maybe they should move to another country...
