Many news articles have appeared about this situation over the last few years. Most of them just repeat the statements by the two Swartzentruber Amish men involved that a more sanitary outhouse would violate their religious beliefs.

Exactly what religious beliefs are they referring to? If the authorities haven't looked into the details of the particular "ordnung" the Swartzentruber Amish follow, they really should do so. That would be the best way to begin working out a means of sewage treatment acceptable to both sides. Plenty of "high-tech/low-tech" methods dealing with human sewage do not involve building modern facilities. There are composting toilets, and swales of specialized bacteria-processing plant life, to name just two.

Human feces are worse than animal manure when it's a question of spreading disease, because the organisms involved are more specific to humans. A primitive lifestyle that was accepted in past centuries when people knew nothing about microorganisms is no longer appropriate.

As a final comment, why aren't plastic buckets a prime example of "modern technology" that conservative Amish should avoid?

Personally, I can't see denim. It gets hard lookin real fast, and if it gets wet it don't ever dry. I guess if you a farmer or a mill person, it durable. But it sure ain't much as a fashion statement.

The establishment wants your money, but there no reason why they can not install compost toilets instead of sewer lines. The building code on the other hand, they should be easily to comply with except they do not need or use electricity, if they do not have powerlines to the homes, they should not need to wire the home.

The Amish seem to have flourished just fine. We would do well to follow their example.

Screw the judiciary and screw the government !

Let's all start brutal puppy mills and stick it to the man! If someone objects, just call it religious freedom.
