I have read a few reports online about my accident on September 21 and have noticed that they all had one thing in common:
Not one said anything that I was wearing my helmet (WI doesn't have a mandatory hemet law), at the time of the accident.
Gee, bet if I was not wearing it, then that would have been in the forefront of the reporting!
Not a word on me wearing my full leathers & heavy duty motorcycle boots either.
The doctor who did my surgery said that the boots saved my foot, otherwise we would be talking amputation.
The head to toe leathers save me from extensive road rash as well.
For the record my helmet is a cheap novelty Nazi style helmet which means it is not a DOT approved helmet.
However as evidenced by the numerous external scrapes & obvious road rash, it saved my head & face from any injury whatsoever.
Otherwise most of the reporting was spot on, especially the part about me taking evasive action to avoid a collision.

See, some of us bikers are not the garden variety types, we actually can make good sound decisions, based on experience & rider education classes but above all it's MY decision & not some bureaucrat who never rode a motorcycle in their life, mandating that I am forced to under duress, under the penalty of law.
It's not so much what you put on your head but rather what you put inside of your head that can make the difference! Helmets can definitely save your life but mandating that by simply strapping on a DOT (another government agency) approved device, somehow will keep me safe, all the while being "legal" to be wearing only sneakers, shorts, tank top & no gloves makes zero sense to me!
Taking an ABATE, AMA or an equivalent type of rider education course to learn the safe & right way to ride, makes perfect sense to me!
