SRC wrote: Just an idea. I knew it would be expensive but since it sounds like the city is expecting the community to pay for it, I figured that people may be more apt to donate for this kind of thing. Just seemed more applicable given the state of drug activity here in town. Didn't know that they had one a few years back. It would nice to see it reinstated and I don't think it would be met with the same type of harsh criticism that this scooter thing has created. I'd donate, but only if the city got rid of the bonehead judges on the bench. Kind of a no win situation if a drug dog leads to an arrest of a drug dealer/user and the judge sets them free.

WHAT are you crazy wrote: This is sick! Does this man not know taxpayers are sick and tired of the out of control spending! Enough already stop the dam spending. You want the dam thing then you buy it. You make $125,000 a year I make less than half of that but you always want more. This is sick just plain god dam sick! It is a little 'sick' that you didn't read down to the fourth line of the article before typing your angry rant.
DeMoura said the department is looking to community organizations to donate money to buy the Segway, which costs about $6,000.
They key word here is DONATE - if enough people want the Segway, they'll donate money. If you don't want one you simply don't donate!!

Its probably quicker to get off this scooter than out of a car or off of a bike. I think its a silly idea but be reasonable...its not like they are going to chase someone on the Segway and when the chasee gets to some stairs the cop is going to just shrug and say "Oh well. I can't follow him." I see your point MsSchrute, but when the officer jumps off of this to chase someone, how does he secure it without losing valuable time?

You could say the same thing about a bike or a car. I don't know much about Segways but there may be some sort of attachment - sort of like a treadmill - where if you get off (or are knocked off) the 'key' comes out and it locks the device up.

According to the article, there is an alarm and a locking mechanism available for the Segway, but it does not explain how either one works.

I really don't know much a bout them at all, but couldn't a couple of people just pick it up and walk off with it? Again, I know NOTHING about them ie, weight, speed, mechanisms. It would be a heck of alot cheaper to pay to replace a bike than one of those.

hmm they should just buy more mountain bikes it goes faster and cost less than a damn scooter and you wont need to put gas or charge the damn sucker up. if the bikes has a problem their easier to fix. gosh police i swear are ridiculous. just take your time like you always do. car or bike or scooter you manage to never be there on time anyways >=|.

I tried to find informaton about it and it looks like they weigh close to 100 lbs. How moronic would a person be to steal a Segway...what are they going to do with it? Ride it around? Like they wouldn't be caught...its not like Segways are everywhere. Have the bikes been stolen when they used those? Does it happen often that an officer has to leave it unattended? Either way - its not going to happen unless people donate...and if a person wants to donate for something like that instead of to medical research or the homeless...that's their problem. lol

LOL, I like the way you put that! Ha ha ha

It should realy bring attention. Wait till the first time someone runs into one of the craters in the streets and sidewalks with one. Hope they issue boxes of band-aids with them.

WOW waste my time dot com... The cops ride their bikes now, I have seen them walk and drive their cars and be just as effective. Maybe they should give the Hoovaround a try... They can put lights and sirens on and chase down the bad guys at a high rate of speed 4mph....
Nothing is going to make the town safer until they get the crap off the streets and the court systems keep it off.

Yes, I noticed that right after I hit "enter"...you see...I have these really long pretty nails and although they can be a typing hazzard....I WOULDN'T GIVE THEM UP FOR THE WORLD! Just one of the pitfalls of a great manicure. I also use.....which isn't very proper either.
