STATE LAW SAYS YOU HAVE TO BE LICENSED TO PERFORM AUTO REPAIRS MY RESEARCH HAS FOUND EIGHTY PER CENT OF AUTO REPAIR BUSINESS DONOT HIRE LICENSED AUTO MECHANICS IN EAST TAWAS OR TAWAS CITY YOU WOULDNT HIRE A UNLICENSED PLUMBER OR ELETRICAN TO WORK ON YOUR HOME WHY HIRE A UNLICENSED MECHANIC TO WORK ON YOUR CAR

unlicensed mechanics should get fined or jail time the state wont enforce the law because they dont have the time and its the common people that suffer

i have been all over tawas the passed ten years trying to find a honest fair and reasonable repair shop i havn;t found yet

tawas has seven independent auto repair shops employing 20--- 25 mechanics less than half are licenced talking to one shop owner i asked him how he got away with it he told me mind my own businessthis is everyones business look for more to come with names and addresses a crook is a crook please beware

Give auto tech a try, they have techs that are certified and do quality work at a resonable price.

unlicenced auto mechanics are like unlicenced doctors or lawyers why hire one your only going to get ripped off i got took for a ride from J--J AUTO AND FROM DARRELLS MAXI MUFFUER look for the license it should be posted look for what they are licensed for if their not licensed in brakes tune up or eletrical go some where else please look or else

Itook my car to J -J auto They didnt fix it right they wernt licensed so there wasnt anything Icould do about it iS THIS TRUE HELP

First of all Dean Arbour requires all mechanics to be state certified and they push ASE certification on thier technitions. (I worked in the service dept. at the Chevrolet store) Yes some shops run off one employees license and they get away with it because they consider it training. And If they had a state inspection you can be your A$$ they would be working along side a licensed mechanic until the inspector left.

hey carma thanks for your input dean arbour is alright except i drive a dodge what bothers me is those clowns at J-J rip off repair they are very unprofessal and they sure dont know what they are doing I had to take my car to Auto Tech to have it repaired right that clown with the three stooges hair cut at J-J knows nothing about auto repair keep in touch JERRY

I'm unlicensed, but have been a car enthusiast (European, mostly German) for many years. I actually do far better work then most licensed shops and my returning customers appreciate it. Shops usually have their (under paid) mechanics under pressure to finish jobs quickly (to handle quantity instead of quality) to make the shop more money and to cover overhead.

I scene everything from oil changes being charged (but not done at all), false recommended brake replacement estimates, to oil filters about to fall off. Some hire kids with little if no experience because they will work cheap.

But needless to say unfortunately there are crooks out there posing as having experience. Had one customer had some crackhead idiot try to fix his FI throttle body by replacing it with a carb using plywood as an adapter plate. It caused a small fire and luckily only burned half his door panel. I had to replace with a good used FI throttle body and assorted parts they lost (or probably sold).

Really? You all think that having a license, or a certificate makes someone a good mechanic? And you think that lacking that makes for a lousy mechanic?

There are mechanics out there who can't afford the time or money to be certified. And there are certified mechanics out there I wouldn't trust to thread a bolt on my kid's tricycle.

I've had some of the best work done for me by people working out of their garage at home.

And, you're right! The home mechanic cannot afford to replace your engine if he/she makes a mistake. And taking that chance is what you do when you go to them.

We've all seen certified mechanics not back up repairs as well.

So where does that leave us? Oh right, wipe your butt with those certificates that hang in dealerships and repair shops. That's really all they are worth.

And no, I do not repair other people's cars or anything. I fix my own, and that keeps me busy enough.

How much would you charge a friend (jobless) for 8/9 hr tuneup/head gasket replacement on an old Nissan 1.6L as an unlicenced auto guy..? I assisted w light etc. today was about 4 hrs to check timing belt and then remove head to find problem. tmrw will be 2-3 hrs putting it back together and tuning it. the other day was 3 hrs tuneup and compression test.. I got 85 nissan wagon free after my probes tranny died-from his gfs (my nest friend) uncle. we haven't discussed repayment.. turned out to be more than just a tuneup or belt adjustment but just a failed gasket. and we left the exhaust manifold on.

That's the problem. The ex hot rodders get in way over their heads when it comes to business and they take it out on their customers. That and rely strictly on experience not even wanting to learn more about their craft. A shop I used the "mechanics" are constantly on the phone with other shops/friends and suppliers to find out what to do. I don't know wether that's good or bad. It's constant. I don't see any manuals or internet in the shop either.

Like most trades people they can't trouble shoot which indicates lazyness and a lack of a full understanding/grasp of mechanics and/or the tools they use.

I think alot of the problem in the US is that mandatory shop including basic auto repair is not given in the high schools anymore whichs opens up the consumer to scams and shotty work. It also keeps alot of good potential out of the field and inhibits the want to bes without a thorough theoretical explanation of how things work. This leaves the markets saturated with want to bes relying on memory and their own arrogance.

Whom would you rather have working on your vehicle; a license mechanic that is unreliable and does a poor job because he's pressured by his employer to meet a quota or a unlicensed or non certified one that have plenty of experience and does an excellent job because he works for himself and can take more time to do a quality job???
