I started this blog some years ago. Had no idea it was still going strong, and there had been so many issues with IKO.

Glad it has become a forum for IKO problems.

Most builders and yards in the area here will not carry IKO anymore, and won't sell them unless directed by the homeowner.

my Certainteed 30 year AG Colonial slates are holding up just great after 10 years, not one corner curled, not one dry shingle, not one broken one.

I bought IKO Renaissance Xl 25 year shingles in 1998, 2000, 2003. All 3 roofs need replacing. Replaced 2 so far 1 left to go next year.
Do what I'm doing, taking them to small claims court for 19K. All happening this Sept. 2010. Take lots of pics and samples.

I have to put new shingles on my home. At present, I have two quotes. My first option is the CertainTeed Landmark 30 yr for $6,600 (2 500 sq ft) and the other option is IKO Cambridge 30 yr for $5 700 (2 500 sq ft). Are these worthwhile choices or should I keep looking?
IKO is garbage ... go to their website. Class action lawsuit file in Jan2010 \ontario canada.

has anybody else had issues with the IKO Shingles? My experience below:
Recent windstorms have us replacing our roof, which is no big deal.
I was offered IKO shingles, and said absolutely not.
My home in northern Michigan, a relatively gentle climate, had IKO shingles, brand new, when I bought the home. I didn't like the ventilation, so added 7 roof vents, and new soffit 2 years after buying. Plus added 8" of insulation. This was 1994.
8 years later, Memorial Day 2002, the IKO shingles, now 10 years old, were cracked, curling, brittle, dry, broken.
I went to the local lumber yard where the shingles were purchased, and they just said forget dealing with IKO. They had told the lumberyard don't even bother calling them, and there were no adjustments to be made.
Many home owners across the entire northern region were in the same boat, from what I heard from 2 lumberyards.
The opinion of the lumberyards were that IKO flooded the market, and now the roofs were leaking.
I stripped the roof completely, and was shocked how easy the shingles came off in broken chunks.
It was a 3 day job for me. Stripped front half, repaired, cut for the ridge vent. since the pitch was 3.5 - 12, used ice and snow shield across the entire roof.
Used the Certainteed 40 year AR Colonial Slate Architechtural shingles.
Then did the back half. It was actually a great 3 day project. the roof was 58 feet long, 36 feet wide, measured as a flat surface.
But the IKO shingles were absolutely crap in my opinion. They also failed way to early, especially since I had upgraded the ventilation. They were 25 year shingles, and barely made 10.
I am having a similar problem here in Massachusetts. My house was built in 1996/1997 and the back roof is literally disintegrating. although I have corrugated soffit vents, they are telling me that I do NOT have any soffit vents which is ridiculous. The lumber supply owner said he has never seen anything like it before and the building site manager agreed. Both have tried to act on my behalf with IKO to no avail. The shingles are curling, breaking and literally falling apart. I'm still working with the developer to resolve the issue but there is NO WAY I will replace them with IKO!!!!!

Honestly, I'm glad I am not the only one. If you google IKO litigation, there is a US litigation being processed in Urbana, Illinois. I suggest folks jump on the bandwagon to get adequate resolution.

Our house was built in 1998 and they used IKO 25 yr. Renaissance XL Shingles. We had to pay extra for them back then to add insult to injury. Within 10 years we have had the same problems with the shingles cracking and all the stones coming off after every storm. We had several people look at the roof and we were told the shingles failed badly and basically disinegrated and we had holes in our roof. Every shingle is cracked. We have to have a new roof put on before winter at a cost to us around $11,000.00.
Every roofing company that came out said they refuse to use IKO anymore because of poor quality and they do not stand behind their warranty. I was told how bad IKO is to try and get them to do anything about it but we still plan on pursuing this with IKO.

Had 25 year Renaissance XL installed on Oshawa home in 2001 and they are all cracking and splitting, as well had 20-25 year installed in 2003 at cottage 1 hour north of Oshawa and many are curling, balding and cracking. Local installer states to contact IKO for warranty kits and they will help me when they are received in approx 6-10 weeks if I am lucky. Does anyone out there have a quicker solution for resolution in this mess? If so please contact me at alexmilosh@hotmail.com
Thanks very much for any help in this situation

I am in Ottawa. Brand new home bought in July 2004. The roofer looked at the IKO RENAISSANCE shingles and was surprised that the shingles were in such bad shape after only 6 years. I am looking at options and they are all very expensive. Now that I see there is a class action lawsuite in the US, I am even more concerned about the shingles that the developer put on my house (and many other houses in this area).
