If you don't want to leave a tip, don't go out to eat.. I don't understand what's so hard about it. If the waiter/waitress is horrible or rude, that's one thing but refusing the gratuity for no reason besides the fact that you "give god 10%" is ridiculous and sad.

Heres the deal most servers have at least 4 tables per hour and don't deserve an 18% tip. With the few bucks an hour they get from their job plus the few dollars they get from their 4 tables they should be fine. It is not a skilled job and does not deserve skilled wages. Workers at McDonalds do more work and they don't get tips or complain about it. The server deserved to be canned and as a result I now eat at Applebees!

I highly doubt you've ever waited tables. The workers at McDonalds don't get tips because they make minimum wage; servers make between $3-$4.50 an hour depending on the state, and that is far from a living wage. Also, I don't know what McDonalds workers you know but they pretty much complain about everything.

Re: the original story, If you can't afford to tip you can't afford to go out to eat. Further this lady is full of shit because she's the pastor of her church and thus doesn't give God anything, her flock tithes to HER. Ridiculous

You are an idiot, for your information the standard tip is only 10 to 15 percent not 18. And I worked at McDonald's for a few years and honestly the workers there don't do as much as servers. They have 3 people doing the jobs that 1 server at a resturant dose,. A server isn't your slave and works hard to get you what your greedy uncaring ass wants to eat. Some servers suck, yes but the rest of us do not deserve to be punished for those few bad ones, IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO TIP THAN STAY HOME!

Because of your attitude I left my "server" 25 cents at her table and she has no one to thank but you. As a server it is you job to "serve" me. I agree with skilled worker servers like you are the problem. Instead of us not going out to eat how about we do, and pay the price on the menu. It is not a right, law, or requirement to give you a tip! Despite this if is your job to be a proper servant and do as we the customers tell you to do, if you don't like it go down to Walgreens and get yourself a pen and paper and go get an education!

What a douchebag, why punish your server for what an anon person posted? I guarantee u do that more than once the you will get the service u pay for. If the employer paid servers min wage it would inflate prices on the menu so much your cheap ass wouldn't be able to afford it. No need to get an education when banking $20+ an hour, but many students use it as means to make it thru college.

And BTW it is required 18% at many place for parties over 8. Applebees is one. This so called woman of God has no clue the servers background spiritual or otherwise to cast judgement that she isn't worth a hard earned dollar.

They might ask for 18% but no it is not required as it is not part of the cost of food. I would laugh at any establishment that would attempt to get me to pay a 18% tip. Besides we all know servers don't need it since you say they make 20 plus an hour. Bottom line if you don't like being a servant get a real job! Until then keep your mouth shut and my drinks coming.

Yes sir required, for large parties. It's already calculated onto your bill so unless u stiff your bill u will pay that. Dining out is a luxury as is being served your dinner, if u don't want to pay for services your ass should stay home. Some love being a server and stick w it for years (many even after earning their degrees) because it is a good living and can be quite fun. Karma will take care of the like of you, this I don't doubt.

Yeah ok lol! They may print it on the bill but they have no power to enforce it. Just like the preacher in the story you say no I am not paying for a tip and they must remove it from the bill. You are only required by law to pay for the food itself not the service. As far as eating out being a luxury I'm sorry you find yourself in such a financial situation. For me eating out is an everyday norm not a luxury, of course I didn't get rich giving my money away to uneducated servers. What college is that the servers you mention go to? Is it the same college all the strippers go to get their degrees lol? You know like servers they are working their way through college and many have degrees LOL! By the way just ate breakfast and left 0 tip just for you ;)

In the end, it really doesn't matter who's side your on, tip or don't tip, that isn't what the problem was at the restaurant. Ask yourself this, Would you want someone to show your credit card receipt online for every freak and weirdo to view and perhaps use your identity? This could snowball in a horrible way for everyone concerned.

This article explains the piss poor example of a pastor DID have to pay the tip.

@ Old School---Don't go to a restaurant w/ a group. Most places will put the tip on the bill and legally you DO have to pay it. You do have an advantage though. In most other aspects--- you, as a customer, are always right even when you are wrong. I'll bet you utilize that advantage often based on your comments. Unless of course you are a troll which w/b a good thing compared to being an obnoxious hoosier.

And one more comment,
The party of 10 only had a bill of $34.93.
WTH! Were they just sharing the same dishes?
Were there a bunch of little ones there?
How do 10 people only spend that amount at Applebee's?

She had the waitress split the $200+ bill to try to get out of paying the mandatory 18% tip. She also had 20 in her party. She was informed of the mandatory gratuity for large parties upon entering the restaurant.

I too was wondering about the $34.93 bill.

Johnny. I didn't see that info on any articles I read but that does explain the $34.93 bill. How do you know the bill was split? I'm not doubting you, just curious.

That pastor proves herself to be a pos the more this info comes out.
