I have sinced moved out of state, and previously lived and bicycled, or rode my horse on Whiskey Road for over 25 years. Many a time. I was struck by thrown objects, sand blasted by the sand trucks, or cut off by speeding cars. Over time the area become too suburban, the charm was replaced my McHouses, and the horsey crowd had vanished, so the day I could move, I did. I had heard the stories about how the road got its name, but the more likely story is the RCA property was a bootleg whiskey still and storage area. It was a pretty easy run from the ports of Patchogue, and Port Jefferson or further east to store liquor in the area, and then on to the then private Vanderbuilt Motor Parkway where police were not allowed. The lore continues that when prohibition ended, the ruralness of the area was not lost on the German-American Bund to brew a little tax-free income in the area. Just curious 2 years later, how this project is going.
