From someone who has always been in the area, let me tell you something about the article. The only tell you see those particular people who have been quotes, Sanders, NAACP rep, are when things happen. Generally when there are meeting, town halls, they send their reps. 101 has been terrible in controlling crime rate as much of the crime happens right in front of their building. I am assuming that they gave up on the community therefore they do not put effort into policing it.

As for the youth, besides the turn of the times were children in general do not value life, Far Rockaway has very little to offer for the youth to participate in. There used to be a time when within immediate areas there were 2 movies theatres and a skating ring, and this was in the 80's and 90's. What happened to it? The Sorrentino center is considered a part facility and very small location for it to be the only center in the area. They are building a PAL down the beach, but will it be big enough to hold the demands of the youth that want something positive to do? The beaches, when was the last time the beaches from Beach 9 to Beach 44 where cleaned? I remember when every summer there was a beach party sponsored by the community? The last party had to be in 1996.

I guess it is the lack luster of accepting the old saying "it is what it is" but when you do not demand more or expect more you will not get any.

Easy to blame the town when it gets overrun by a criminal horde. What are the cops at the 101st supposed to do, play nursemaid to this army of thugs and gangstas? Nobody put a gun to these peoples' heads and said "You are going to stay at the bottom of society. You must trash and burn everything in sight. For God's sake don't go to school. Keep your kids in the streets, don't marry their mothers, steal what you want and don't forget to cry out when you get caught."

Or did I miss something?

tooky; its also the choice pple themselves make, isnt it? who is to break the cycle of this? isnt it up to teens to be smart enough to see what life will be like if you have a kid at a young age, and without a father? who is responsible? you arent placing enough blame on the parents not supervising their children, or the kids themselves. surely most want something more from life than continuing the cycle of life in the hood?

People need make a stand for themselves. I also agree with the posting above the last one. These youths need to be accountable for themselves! Common sense tells you right from wrong - they need to start swimming and not sinking in with the rest at the bottom of the barrel lol

The police 'gave up' on the community? More like the community gave up on itself. When the sentiment of the community is 'f the police' how concerned do you think any individual officer would be. It becomes a mercenary effort to them, go into work, answer radio calls and then get back to civilization.
You must be pretty dense not to come to any conclusion of why two movie houses and a skating rink closed. Try inconsiderate behavior by patrons who do not know how to comport themselves in public. Vandalism by the same. Crime and the resulting civil liability from those looking to hit the lotto as a result of blaming the establishment for a lack of security.
Is there ONE community organizer in the hood to organizer its residents for a 'beach cleanup' day if the city is slacking in its duties? If it's so important it would get done, guess they would rather complain about the mess which was created by their own.
Instead of DEMANDING more or EXPECTING more how about DOING more for the community you live in or just expect it to be 'it is what it is'.

Please stay in school. Reading this hurts my eyes.
Get an eduction, then come back and help your community. Until Black Leaders encourage their communties to be successful, and to embrace core family values, nothing will change.

Stay in school? Tooky is just displaying what his culture is proud of, their black identity, which is anything other than the norm. There is no amount of school that can help him its not part of his makeup. Remember like he said he's disadvantaged and will gladly live off that label for his entire lifetime. The crutch he was given at birth will remain with him to the grave. You need to realize that black leaders make their living off of all of the tooky's out there, nothing will change.

Commenting on the article about Far Rockaway it is no wonder why the community is the way it is. You can walk down the main streets & all you see is trash blowing around. The people of that community don't have respect for themselves how are they going to have it for their community. Lets put the blame where it belongs w/ the community itself not w/ the cops, community leaders etc.

I grew up in Far Rockaway an in many ways it is still a beautiful place to live. There is a relationship between economics and the so called criminal behavior in the Rockaways. A bit more love, Christmas and cash would do wonders for the Rockaways. And there are many, many good things about the Rockaways, for instance, in many ways I believe that those in the Rockaways treat their fellow citizens such as cats and dog better.

My brother is a retired Nassau County cop who used to work the precinct covering the 5 Towns, and said that most of the crimes in that part of Nassau were committed by residents of Far Rockaway who crossed the border to steal.

People, lets not forget the three officers that beat down a Longbeach firefighter that was protecting his sisters dignity, then the cops like always turned the story around to protect themselves against reprisal. I volunteered for this Dept as a kid taking documents to and from detectives to other officers. I saw 2/3rds of the community walk in with cuffs. The best cops that wer'e on the force since have retired. Farrockaway is the land that time and NYC forgot. It all started back in 1976 when boardwalk restaurants started being burned to the ground by people like Jerry Faus from beach 45 & rckwy bch blvd. Then more of the criminally minded moved in bringing more and more crime from their respective countries.

Daily Horoscope for May 24

Aquarius

In complete contrast to yesterday, you have your head screwed on firmly today. Yet you won't be boringly sensible or drearily practical, so there's no danger of you having turned into a dry old stick overnight. It's a good day for keeping track of important details and processes, such as confirming a forthcoming appointment or filling in a form and then making a copy of it before sending it off.
