The whole building was full of smoke? Not one Fire Officer noticed that the building WAS NOT in flames?? Couldn't these elderly citizens have been protected on a floor that wasn't effected by smoke??? Wasn't the response fast enough (fire station right across the street) to figure out this wasn't a scene from The Towering Inferno???? Maybe its time for a few East Side FD's to consider going Pro, I mean paid!!!!

You people are very bored or something. Your comments show how ignorant you all are. Unless you were right there you can't say what should or shouldn't have been done. Good job for the quick actions of all involved.

As usual, somebody with little knowledge of the scene decides to spout off. SOP- the HOME SOP- was to evacuate all residents in the event the alarm goes off. Some residents are not fully cognizant, and some a are bedbound or wheelchair-bound. So best thing to do was total evacuation so you can account for everybody in case the situation goes south. The fire response was immediate according to the ERFDs pre-plan, and went off without a hitch. Instead of adding paid FFs to districts, how about we get the paid FFs to be VOLUNTEERS in their off-duty time? Funny, but I seem to remember my history- the part about the US Fire Service starting in Philadelphia, and the even better part- it was ALL VOLUNTEER! The smaller towns cant afford Career (paid) guys, and ERFD has stood as a volunteer Department since 1897, and have taken care of business everytime.

Yup. Those with the smallest brains always have the biggest mouths, and not enough to do to keep them busy.

Concerned citizen...dont you know everyone else knows how ERFD & Depaul should do things??:-) Nevermind that this plan of action has worked successfully how many times in the past?
As for wanna be FDNY...at least ER's trucks roll when they are called out..and generally speaking they roll with more than a crew of 2 which is more than some paid guys have on their rigs elsewhere in the county.
