Morris's grocery store use to be in that area. Is that what you are talking about? It wasn't right next to Martin School though. It was on North Street.

I think the one you are talking about was on the left side of the street if you are facing the front of Martin, although the one I'm thinking of was in the 60s. It wasn't Morris' though. I can't remember who had it, but it was an older man and his wife and they carried all kinds of candy and it was just in their house. We would walk down there and buy candy.

Exactly, the empty parking lot right next to Assembly of God Church. I remember going in there and buying "penny candy" when I was little. Can't buy anything for a penny these days.

The name of the store was Check's.
I used to go there a lot when I was young.
You could buy a bag full of candy for a quarter.
And it was on the same road in front of Martin school; As you walk away from the school, it was the 2nd or 3rd house on the right.
I know it was there until at least '74 and then just a few years later the woman died and the man moved, I believe.

Mr. and Mrs. Check (sp) Walden owned the little candy store just down the street on Wilkinson from Martin school.

I'm so glad you all brought this up because I have been trying for the longest to think of the name of Check's. Boy, weren't those the good ole days?!

yes, they were. Too bad things can't be like that again. Wouldn't it be great to know that kids could be as safe as we were "back in the day".
