You are a shining example of what is so very wrong across this country.

You're right - we should only listen to studies from groups who slant things the way YOU want to see them. The last time I checked, the Heartland Institute was in independent organization that does not accept government funding, and receives only 25% of their budget from corporations. They also do not do reasearch for special interest groups. They actually offer a refreshing perspective on many issues, using REAL science to back up their claims and not alarmist junk science.
Ok ok now everyone just because people smoke dont make them stupid,as a matter of fact if i were i make darn good money doing it. Im a smoker and i respect non smokers but in the same breathe i believe non smokers should also respect me for being a smoker. what ever happened to peoples rights? if they wanna make smoking an issue why not have resurants for smokers and some for non? goverment talks about health well what about all the drunks leaving the bar killing another every single day???there wasting there money doing all this research why arent they researching on aids or other cancers ect??? I dont judge people because they smoke or dont so its really sad that most non smokers do that to smkoers

I hope you save a few copies of your book "How to be perfect" for your friends here on the board. I wish to know what it is like to breathe such rarified air. Please tell us.
Nothing perfect about knowing it's a dick move to call someone "tubby" and make other insulting comments with absolutely no basis and only the intent to hurt and degrade.

Exactly the kind of dense, ingorant remark that makes non-smokers resent smokers.

I've been reading these posts for about an hour now and I am happy that people are utilizing their right to free speech, one of the principals that this country was founded on.

Two other principals that this country was founded on are personal choice and tolerance. The majority of the people that flocked to these lands did so to avoid persecution and the lack of tolerance for their personal choice. In this particular case, it was religion. Indviduals were cursed at, persecuted, and even murderded, because others thought that their choice was incorrect, "stupid" and many of the other choice words used in this forum.

The choice here is to live a smoke free lifestyle or to smoke. Both sides need to be tolerant and respectful of the other side's right to choose. Today, the issue is smoking. Tomorrow, it may be a different group limiting your personal choices.

Personally, I am 100% capitalist. Let the almighty dollar decide. If it is more profitable for a business owner to have a smoking restaurant/bar, then he should be able to do so. If he believes his business would be more profitable if he had a non-smoking establishment, then he should create that type of environment for his patrons. For me, it is the same as choosing what type of music to play in a restaurtant. If the restaurant plays country music, I do not eat there. If enough people do not eat there, it goes out of business. But I would never say that others should not be able to eat a meal while listening to country music.

Face it people, smoking stinks, it's unhealthy, filthy and cigarette butts are some of the greatest trash pollution on our streets, beaches and highways. Most smokers think it's okay to just toss their butts anywhere. It's a nasty habit. In the words of Mr. Winston Churchill, "The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it and ignorance may deride it. But in the end, there it is."

Yawwwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnnn.

Is the "ban" such a failure that they need to keep propagandizing for it in the news? It's rather disgusting that the "free" media keeps stumping for the government line rather than reporting pertinent news. Rather irresponsible, IMO.

Right on. If the clowns in Sprginfield were seriously against smoking, they would ban it outright. But, sadly, they are addicted to useless spending, and their income has to come from somewhere.
Way to go N-s C !!! One thing you anti's need to do is start keeping your promise. I work for a casino, and guess what? Since the smoking ban went into affect, our buiness is dropping and dropping and dropping. And why? because the gamblers are driving straight into Indiana. Most of the bus companys that drop off at our casino have already started to re-route to Indiana. And why? because you anti's have chased all our business away. Well guess what, casino's are in business to make money. And as they watch their profits drop into the basement, they are never to proud to pull up the tent and move to a state where their gamblers can bet in comfort. Heed this warning. It won't be long before Harrah's and Horseshoe pack up and say goodbye to Illinois forever. And do you think the state is just going to write off all that Gambling tax when they do. They are going to strap it on us, both anti's and pros alike.

That's very nice of business to build such structures but how about giving smokers the the tools needed to quit instead.
Since 'business' was not resposible for your smoking habit, it would hardly be responsible for your quitting. That's something you need to take care of on your on time. Give it a try.

All you people that talk about banning cigarettes are really hypocritical I'll bet. Being quite a liberal town, I bet a lot of you preach tolerance and respect for others' lifestyle choices. I'm not a smoker, but I believe people whould still be able to smoke on the street and in designated sections while in a public place.

Anyone who supports a smoking ban is blatantly ignorant. So many people are missing the point. Do all the bitching you want but no one has the right to have cancer free lungs. On the other hand in America we do have the right to own private property and use it how we choose.

I am sorry but this is sort of funny. It’s like a little gas chamber where smokers can infuse their bodies with toxins and fall victim to second hand smoke also. And we wonder why we have escalating healthcare costs. Maybe the tobacco companies should be saddled with paying for our medical insurance---tobacco seems to be linked to most of our major medical problems
Does your neighbor pay for your health care now?If you run out of milk does a cow stop buy and hook you up? You see , what i'm getting at is we have to support and maintain ourselves.!. I don,t understand at 29 years old why I have others making my decisions for me. I remember as a kid when these same morons trying to ban life where fighting to free it. The Soviet Union used to tell it's citizens how, when, and where and we all know how that went. As for you expecting me to support you and yours.....no thanks. How about I take care of me........and you take care of you and let the Government get back to external matters of state.

I smoked for 35 years. Quit two years ago - just got sick of it - being a pariah and treated like a second class person. My lungs are checked every year and have 110% capacity compared to the normal for a person of my weight and my circulatory health is perfect. Not a sign of any lung issue. Never had a single smoking health issue. There is certainly no doubt that smoking is not great for you, but the hysteria surrounding smoking goes way beyond reason. People are being force fed anti-smoking BS as though it is the gospel - it seems the truth is irrelevant when you are on a moral crusade. The same moral crusade that gave us alcohol prohibition and drug prohibition. Why is it people simply can not bring themselves to mind their own business? No, smoking is no the most healthful habit, but it also isn't the abject horror that people need to believe it is. All things in moderation. There is risk in everything and for many people there is risk in virtually everything they enjoy. Risk is a part of life. The risk for smoking has been grossly exagerated - particularly in regard to "second hand smoke" about which the anti-smoking lobby is only too happy lie.

friend who quit smoking 7 years ago, dies of lung cancer at 36. Dr. said from smoking. She lived in a farmming area planes spray chemicals all the time. She always lived in this farm area. I think Doctors blame any smokers problem on smoking. I think this girl, who had not smoked in 7 years, was more likely over sprayed with farm chemicals and enviromental causes more likely caused her cancer. She was not a heavy smoker, and very healthy. Cigarettes are bad for you, but so easy to blame all lung problems on smoke. My dad smoked 1 pack a day for 40 years, lived to be 87, had no lung problems. everyone is different.

Obviously it's fine for you to have the position you do, but if you're going to use psychological terms such as "co-dependent", try to at least have some inkling as to what the term means. Smokers are addicted and "dependent." Co-dependency is something else altogether. Perhaps if you're going to have a general distaste for smoker's and their addictions, you ought to at least use some intelligence in backing up your argument rather than some term you heard thrown about near a water cooler at the office or on Dr. Phil's show without knowing what it really means.
Catherine wrote:
Ooo, the ceiling is low! Everyone can get even more second-hand smoke this way.
Only 1 in 5 adults smokes now. We need to spend money on helping people quit, not assisting them in continuing to harm themselves. I do feel bad for their addiction, truly. But this is co-dependent.
