You both get an 'F' in reading comprehension.

Read the story again. CAT thinks it is on the uptick. Yes, 2500 previously laid-off workers got notice that they won't be hired back. Yet 550 previously laid-off workers will be rehired.

"...550 others will be brought back to work by the end of next year."
This means by the end of 2010, which tells me they have HOPES of bringing these workers back sometime within the next 14 months.
Having worked in private industry for years, I know anything can happen during that period of time, and their plans may never materialize.
If the dollar continues to remain strong, Caterpillar's exports will continue to fall, meaning that these workers may never be brought back. They are hoping for a weak dollar so that their exports are less expensive, but it all depends on the strength of the dollar.
Also, you might notice that 81% of the laid off workers are gone for sure, as Caterpillar knows it will be a long time before their products are needed in America.
This company isn't stupid and they know with the way our current government is disregarding private businesses and manufacturers and concentrating on making people more dependent on government hand-outs, we'll have over three more years of recession, now known as a 'jobless recovery'.

The economy is the way it is at the moment. At least CAT didn't take bailout money from the goverment! Someone is actually thinking at CAT instead of wasting money like GM and AIG did! Why keep people there if there is no work for them? CAT has been laying off people so the one's who are still there should have been saving all this time and not assume their job was safe! No job anywhere is safe!

Except for government jobs, of course, as they will be hiring to administer their 'entitlement' programs that make people more dependent of them.
To stimulate the economy, they should give private manufacturing corporations tax cuts to tide them over during this downtime and individuals tax cuts to stimulate spending due to more take home pay.
But NO, they bail out the inefficient corporations that should declare bankruptcy and regroup as more efficient and cost effective companies, and spend money on government handouts instead of putting people back to work making something that keeps our economy moving.
I agree with your premise that people should have saved during the past boom time, but the fact is they didn't, so they NEED jobs to continue eating and paying for housing.
There is NO such thing as a 'jobless recovery', unless you want the government supporting all the people out of work.

Yeah, "Hope & Change".

Just like marooned survivors on a desert island.

Problem is, you can't eat "Hope & Change".

People are beginning to realize this.

It won't be long before someone gets disgruntled enough to, well, you know.

Daily Horoscope for January 5

Taurus

Everything seems to be getting under your skin at the moment, but this is no excuse to lose your temper, and you know it. Better by far to be discreet and plough on steadily, without looking to the left or right. If you keep your feet on the ground and don't get discouraged, there are definitely fair winds that will blow you along. It's just a question of finding the right balance between confidence and commonsense.
