Last summer on a few different nights, and then last night, my husband and I were both woken up by this awful thrumming/humming sound. Almost more of a feeling than a sound. It doesn't sound like freeway or electricity noises.... Once last summer I even went outside to see if I could find the source, but it was sort of everywhere. We live in Mountain View, near Moffett Field (maybe something going on there?) Anyone else heard this or know what it could be? It's a really unpleasant noise.

Thank GOD I found this! I just got home very late after helping a friend with car problems and upon opening my car doors I thought there was an aircraft overhead. No, just an even more intense version of the humming/whirring sound from last night. It is EXTREMELY loud right now. I also live right near Moffet. I assume it's something going on there but I can't seem to find an answer. Anyone?

You're all wrong. Not everyone can hear it. Actually you are a few of the chosen by the government for a top secret project. Without your knowning, they snuck into your homes late one night and implanted micro chips into your brain. If you shoud ever meet, don't stand too close to each other, the feedback in your inner ear will be horrible. :-)

Sounds like this are quite common, but believe it or not the cause remains unknown. It may be a tone that certain people have hypersensitivity to (A device was being marketed in the UK that caused discomfort to children & youths, but didn't appear to affect anyone over their mid 20's - due to the gradual degredation of hearing caused by age.)

If you all must know, the mysterious humming sound is the C130's be serviced or prepped on Moffett airfiled. At any given moment there are 2 or 3 on the runway. I have heard this sound since I was kid, and now I work across from the air strip at Moffett Towers, and can see them fire them up every time the sound starts. They essentially work on them every day, even very early morning or late evening. At night, or when it is overcast, the sound carries the furthest.
I always assumed it was the wind tunnel until I started working here and saw the propellers spinning up every time the sound started.

I would hear noises ( humming noises) all the time in the middle of the night back in the 90s- 2005, then the noises just stopped, anyone else hear the same low hum.
