Hi! I am a Wading River resident, and I was just wondering if anyone out there has had experience with the process of obtaining permits for home construction, whether it be for an additional structure on your property, or for a large addition, etc.
We are looking to build a small cottage on my property for my husband to use as a home office, or as a small in-law abode for my mom to come and live in. It would essentially be less costly than converting our garage into a in-law, since we could purchase the cottage pre-fab for around $10K.
I've heard horror stories from some people in other parts of Long Island about the process of obtaining building permits, so I just wanted to get an idea of how easy/difficult it might be in Riverhead town. Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated.

On Longisland you don't really "own" your home its more like you rent it from the town and have to ask your landlord for permission before you make any changes.
It's a great big hassle but that's what people "want" from there government I guess.
