76 years old? Are there any rules for pilots like there should be for drivers that make them retake some type of certification tests as they get older?

There's pilots in their nineties still flying safely. It's much more onerous than for drivers. Every pilot must be checked by an flight instructor every two years, which includes at least a one-hour check flight. Also, depending on the "type" of medical certification, all pilots must undergo a medical exam by a specially trained FAA certified physician. The time period between exams depends on the age and class of medical/license the pilot is operating under, varying between six months (airline pilots) and three years (under-40 recreational flyers.) The details are available in a large number of places so I won't get into it here. The pilot in question was probably checked within the last 2 years at the outside.

One exception; if he was operating as a "sport pilot" he doesn't need a medical certification, just a valid driver's license. The article didn't say what type of aircraft it was, but sport pilots are limited to slow and light airplanes. Newsday might have been more helpful by identifying the type, color, and registration number of the missing airplane.

How dare you make such harsh comments. This man is my uncle and we are devasted. He was a very experienced pilot and we all pray that he is found alive and well. If you can't make a nice comment keep them to yourselves. You may someday find yourself in a similar situation with a family member you love and care about.

could he have come down in the Pine Barrens? I live near Gabreski and have walked the Barrens for years and they can be very remote even if itsd a relatively small area. I assume the ANG 106th would be doing fly-overs but its possible he back in there.

Why are you on here? You should be looking for the guy or in mourning. Get off if you do not like it.

There are some roads and plenty of paths back in the Barrens;
Try Old Country Road in Westhampton, just as you cross the LIRR there's a wide dirt road that eventually goes all the way to the Sunrise Highway - this is within 2 miles of Gabreski -
if he flew on Sunday the wind was from the south-west which means he would have flown in that direction and would have had to circle to make Gabreski, roughly turning northwest then northeast and probably flying over Rt 51 - Moriches-Riverhead Road and then to Gabreski. If he was landing at Gabreski into the wind the approach would have been eventually from the northeast. That area is populated and someone would have seen him but the area near that dirt road I mentioned is pretty desolate - no houses, just Pines -

Kenny Eaton is my Uncle as well. I personally flew on one of his planes and I can assure you he has a pilots license and has been flying for close to 30 years,if not more. He is not your typical 76 year old. Full of life, VERY healthy and all his wits. I pray they can find my uncle and hope the idiots who think they're funny keep their jokes to themselves. Just think...what if it was your father or uncle they're looking for????
