It is likely standard "by the book" procedure anytime someone is killed in this manner. Remember, the police need to do their job correctly or they can face consequences.

Yes, that is clearly a procedural issue. The driver won't be charged, and I'm sure the temporary impounding is the least of his worries right now. Hitting someone, enven when you couldn't have done anything about it, can really weigh heavily on a persons well-being.

He probably thought to himself, "oh, theyhave to impound it, whatever."

It is called S.O.P.(standard operating procedure) and that funny thing called the LAW that the police HAVE to follow. It would also, if the auto is in good working order, release the driver from a lot of if not all of the liability. Before blowing your stack the next time educate yourself.

Better the Police impound the vehicle and give it the once over... I'm sure these folks were completely NOT at fault... but that doesn't stop some bottom feeding lawyer from making a claim two or three years from now saying the truck was defective in some way and that they were responsible for the accident. It covers both the criminal and civil issues that arrise out of a situation like this.

It is just procedure, and im sure you would want it done if it was one of your relatives. Obviously the folks that hit the guy dont care about the impound, so why do you. It makes sense to rule out any mechanical malfunctions that may have occured. Just because the guy shouldnt have been there and it was dark doesnt mean something wrong with the car couldnt have contributed to the accident. Maybe the brakes didnt properly. If the cops didnt impound the car and just said guy was in the wrong place case closed, and then you found out something was wrong with the car, youd probably be the first to scream SUE SUE SUE!! THE LAZY COPS DIDNT DO THE JOB!

Why does it have to be suicide? Did you ever stop to think that not everyone on long island has a car? Some people have to walk to go to the grocery store or to get to and from work. Unfortunately the streets on long island were not designed with pedestrians in mind. The lights do not give adequate crossing time and cars don't yield to people in cross walks. Also most people out here aren't looking for pedestrians because it's not like the city where everyone walks. You look down for a second to change the radio or do whatever but your main focus is where are the cars at around me, not if someone is about to cross the street in front of me.

I ride home on Sunrise Highway every day and see people crossing the highway east of William Floyd just about every day. Kids mostly. The other day one was riding a small motor scooter and zoomed in front of traffic from the median and everyone hit the brakes. Considering there is a bridge for the William Floyd Parkway not too far away, I have no idea why they must play on Sunrise.

It is a CONTROLLED ACCESS HIGHWAY there and peds are not allowed on that road. This is not your ordinary side street. And I hate to break it to you but some people are too chicken to kill themselves so they jump in front of cars and trains. The investigation that the first poster whined about will tell find the truth. Maybe it was and maybe it wasn't suicide and maybe you should take a deep breath before jumping all over someone who asked a very VALID question.

Don't run with sizzors and don't walk on Sunrise Highway. good rules.

I hope the driver and passenger of the vehicle aren't metally scarred and I hope the truck isn't too bad either

I remember crossing Sunrise Hwy just about everyday with my friends comring from River Rd. going to be a delinquent and walk around Shirley because there was nothing better to do. I was only about 15 and of course had little to no brains. But at my age, there is no way I would even consider doing that. What was this guy thinking? 41? come on.

I just got home I am a bit shooken up. a man was walking right in the middle of a 3 lane highway, where cars go 50mph and it is not lighted. he swirved and miss him, so did a truck and another car around me, oh my god, i hope he is okay. the guy next to me was on phone with police. saw the police going his way with flashing lights 2 minutes later, I hope he is okay, a prayer for him. he did not look sane, very scary and death in his eyes. okay so this just happened on rt. 18 southbound lane, after exit for route 1 north and before the light by Hilton/ turnpike entrance, east brunswick. Anyway, very very scary.. Again, hope the guy got stopped, I am worried he might jump, as there is a bridge near by.. WOW.. What a night!
